Men with erection problems now have an extra reason to see their doctor: even relatively minor erectile difficulties could signal 'silent' heart disease and may indicate an increased risk of dying early from any cause, a major new study shows.
An Australian study ? the world's largest to investigate the link between erectile dysfunction and heart disease ? has found that men with erectile dysfunction have a higher risk of hospital admission for heart disease, even if they have no history of heart problems. They are also at greater risk of premature death from any cause.
The research, from the Sax Institute's 45 and Up Study and published in international journal PLOS Medicine today, is the first to show a direct link between how severe a man's erection problem is and his risk of dying early or being treated in hospital for heart disease.
"The risks of future heart disease and premature death increased steadily with severity of erectile dysfunction, both in men with and without a history of cardiovascular disease," lead author and 45 and Up Study Scientific Director Professor Emily Banks said.
"Rather than causing heart disease, erectile dysfunction is more likely to be a symptom or signal of underlying 'silent' heart disease and could in future become a useful marker to help doctors predict the risk of a cardiovascular problem. This is a sensitive topic but men shouldn't suffer in silence; there are many effective treatments, both for erectile dysfunction and for cardiovascular disease."
Erection problems are very common: around one in five men aged 40 and over report moderate or severe erectile dysfunction.
While previous studies have shown that men with severe erectile dysfunction are more likely than men with no erectile difficulties to have cardiovascular events such as heart disease or stroke, this study (funded by the Heart Foundation and the NSW Office for Health and Medical Research) is the first to review gradients of erectile dysfunction from none, to mild, moderate and severe forms.
Heart Foundation Cardiovascular Health Director Dr Rob Grenfell said the results were nationally significant and demonstrated why governments should invest in large health studies such as the 45 and Up Study.
"These results tell us that every man who is suffering from any degree of erectile dysfunction should be seeking medical assistance as early as possible and also insisting on a heart health check by their GP at the same time," Dr Grenfell said.
The researchers, from the Sax Institute, Australian National University, The University of Sydney, Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute and The George Institute for Global Health examined hospital and death records for 95,000 men from the 45 and Up Study ? the largest ongoing study of healthy ageing in the Southern Hemisphere, with more than 250,000 people taking part.
The men gave information about health and lifestyle factors and were followed for a two to three-year period, recording 7855 hospital admissions related to cardiovascular disease and 2304 deaths.
"The large number of men in the study meant we could also look at the risks in relation to different types of cardiovascular disease," Professor Banks said. "We found men with erectile dysfunction were at higher risk of heart attack, heart failure, peripheral vascular disease and heart conduction problems."

A private space plane is slated to fly on its own for the first time in the next six to eight weeks, a key drop-test milestone in the vehicle's quest to fly astronauts on roundtrip space missions.
The?Dream Chaser?spacecraft, built by aerospace firm Sierra Nevada Corp., will be released by a carrier helicopter at an altitude of 12,000 feet (3,657 meters) or so, then fly back and land autonomously on a runway at NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center in California.
The unmanned 30-second drop test will kick off a series of trials that culminate in trips to low-Earth orbit and back, potentially paving the way for contracted, crew-carrying flights to the International Space Station for NASA, company officials said during a press conference today (Jan. 30).
The seven-person Dream Chaser looks a bit like a miniature space shuttle.?It's about 29.5 feet (9 m) long and has a wingspan of 22.9 feet (7 m). For comparison, NASA's space shuttle was 122 feet (37 m) long, with a wingspan of 78 feet (24 m).?[Gallery: Meet the Dream Chaser Space Plane]
Filling the space shuttle's shoes
Colorado-based Sierra Nevada is one of several spaceship-building companies to receive funding from NASA's commercial crew program, which is encouraging private American vehicles to fill the void left by the?space shuttle?fleet's retirement in 2011.
In its latest round of awards, NASA granted funding to Sierra Nevada for the Dream Chaser and to SpaceX and Boeing, which are working on capsules called Dragon and the CST-100, respectively. The Dream Chaser space plane is the only non-capsule design being developed by a major contender.
The space agency hopes at least one of these vehicles is ready to fly astronauts to and from the space station by 2017. Until such homegrown private spaceships come online, NASA and the nation are dependent on Russian Soyuz spacecraft to provide this orbital taxi service.
The newly announced drop test is a step along the path to orbit. It will mark the first time the Dream Chaser has ever flown solo, though the space plane did take to the skies last year in a captive-carry test, during which it was held aloft the entire time by a heavy-duty helicopter.
The Dream Chaser drop-test vehicle is currently at a facility in Colorado, but it will be moved to Dryden in about two weeks, officials said. The first flight test should come four to six weeks after that, with two to five more flights following to gather additional data about the vehicle's in-air performance.
"The first flight test is just to make sure it will fly, everything works properly, we land on the runway safely," said Sierra Nevada's Jim Voss, head of the Dream Chaser program and a former space shuttle astronaut. "We'll put in maneuvers on the following tests that will gather the coefficients that we need to properly define the aerodynamic characteristics of the vehicle."
A testing campaign
If everything goes well with the upcoming series of tests, Sierra Nevada will conduct more extensive flight trials with another Dream Chaser vehicle, officials said.
"It will be similar to this vehicle, but we'll be able to pilot it with a test pilot on board, and then that same vehicle will be ultimately used for an orbital flight to demonstrate the capability of the Dream Chaser in orbit," Voss said.
Aerospace giant Lockheed Martin will help build that more advanced flight-test vehicle, as part of an extensive partnership with Sierra Nevada that the companies just announced today.
"They're building the structure for that vehicle, as we finish the design of some of the other systems we'll use for that additional flight test that we'll do in about a year to 18 months," Voss said.

We've never done it like that, though, at our house. I tried (really, I tried!) to keep it low-key for Jaina's first birthday. But once I invited one family from the neighborhood, I realized that it would be nice to invite another family from the neighborhood, and then I couldn't leave out the other family from the neighborhood, too. Then there were friends from MOMS Club and from the library storytime. And close friends of the family. And of course, family!
We ended up having so many people that some guests had to sit on our stairs and on our front porch to eat cake.
With Jayce's first birthday party, pretty much the exact same thing happened.
The only difference with Jocelyn's party is that Brian put his foot down about NOT having it at the house.

Still a shocking number of women are killed within their own walls through domestic violence. Sexual abuse of girls, often by relatives, though widespread, shrouds in taboo. Millions are trafficked while some are sold. The list of horror is endless. The picture is all too clear. India is confronted by the Slaughter of Eve, a systematic gendercide of tragic proportion.
According to World Health Organization, one woman in seven is the victim of rape or attempted rape during her life time in India.
While the facts are known and the figures are easily available to the government, the issue has never been taken seriously till the brutal gang-rape and death of a young girl that stirred the conscience of India. Violence against women should be considered as one of the great crimes of humanity. There should not be any room for complacency in face of rape and degradation of women.
Well! India does not have the dearth of legal documents that call for the eradication of atrocity against women, yet the nation has failed to stop the occurrence of crime against women particularly the frequency of rape incidents that happen even now every day in every city without a stop.
The innocent girls continue to fall victims to the lust of the criminals. India stands as a helpless bystander in view of the growing reports of rapes in the streets and outskirts of cities.

It is time India broods about the safety of its women in the way Arab countries do. Islamic principles will certainly help it overcome the challenges the nation is facing at present to check the crime against women.

DENVER (AP) ? A political generation ago, the West signaled the nation's rightward swing ? from the emergence of Ronald Reagan to the success of tax-limitation ballot measures in California and Colorado. But now the fabled expanse of jagged peaks, arid deserts and emerald coastlines is trending in a different direction.
From Washington state ? where voters in November legalized marijuana and upheld the legality of gay marriage ? to New Mexico, once a hotly contested swing state that Republicans ceded to Democrats in the presidential campaign, the West has become largely Democratic terrain.
There are, as always, exceptions. Lightly populated Idaho and Wyoming remain strongly Republican, as does Utah. And Democrats are struggling in Arizona, where a bruising immigration debate has given Republicans a lock on statewide offices but may provide Democrats an opening by firming up their support among the state's growing Hispanic population. Still, the overall trend is clear, according to analysts on all sides of the political spectrum.
"It's just a different world," said Bill Carrick, a veteran Democratic strategist in Los Angeles who has worked widely in the region. "Nevada became the next California and now Arizona looks like it will become the next Nevada. ... It's just pushing the West further and further from Republicans."
The shift is due to a combination of factors: the fusion of the region's libertarian spirit with both an influx of transplants from more liberal states seeking a better quality of life, and a growing immigrant population alienated by increasingly hardline Republican immigration proposals.
"Look at the migration patterns," said Sig Rogich, a Republican consultant in Las Vegas who worked on Reagan's presidential campaigns. "You're seeing the aftermath of a new generation of young men and women whose parents moved westward."
Politics is different in the region. Western states generally have weak political parties, part of the legacy of their political maturation during the progressive era at the start of the 20th century. Most local elections are nonpartisan affairs and voters often have the right to unilaterally set policy via ballot initiative. Western voters have long cherished nonpartisan independence, even when they voted a relatively straight party ticket.
"The West is the most American part of America," said Dave Kopel of the Independence Institute, a libertarian think tank in Denver. "It is a place where you have much more respect for individual choice and you have more ability to be who you want to be."
During the 1980s and 1990s, that libertarian streak fed a series of Republican victories as voters approved tax-limitation initiatives, protested federal environmental regulations and kept statehouses firmly in the GOP's hands. But nowadays it means something else, Carrick said.
"The libertarian thing is no longer about property rights or gun rights," he said. "It's now about letting people live their lives as they choose."
Ironically, Republicans' success may have contributed to that shift. The party managed to enshrine staunch anti-tax measures in several states' constitutions through ballot initiatives, making it very difficult to raise taxes in California, Colorado and Washington state. As a result, Democrats can't easily raise revenue ? but they also can't be attacked for doing so, said Ron Dotzauer, a Seattle-based Democratic strategist. "They can't be defined as the pro-tax group because they can't tax," he said.
There are prominent Republicans who demonstrate that the party can still win the region. Brian Sandoval in Nevada and Susana Martinez in New Mexico are popular Republican governors, but their relatively moderate stances often put them at odds with the national party. Both, for example, just agreed to the Medicaid expansion under President Barack Obama's health care plan, something that is anathema to many conservative Republicans.
"People appreciate a leader who takes more pragmatic approaches," said Nicole McCleskey, a New Mexico-based GOP pollster who advises Martinez. She argued that Democrats' success in the region is overstated and noted that, outside of California, Republicans in 2012 only lost one Western congressional seat. As an example of how Republicans can succeed, she cited New Mexico, where the party picked up seats in the state Legislature despite the Obama wave.
But McCleskey acknowledged that New Mexico Republicans were helped by the national GOP basically giving up on the presidential race in the state. GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney did not contest the state, minimizing the damage of a divisive presidential campaign.
"We were able to localize a lot of these races and build on the change that has taken place with a strong Republican governor," she said. "Republicans fought on state issues and the Democrats tried to fight on national issues."
Jill Hanauer is a Democratic strategist who engineered her party's takeover of the Colorado state Legislature in 2004. She agrees with McCleskey that the West cannot be considered a Democratic lock.
"The reason Democrats or progressives are winning is that Republicans got fat and happy," said Hanauer, who is now president of Project New America, a political data and strategy company in Denver. "The worst thing that can happen for Democrats is to take it for granted."
In 2002, Ruy Teixeira, a Washington, D.C.-based Democratic strategist, co-wrote "The Emerging Democratic Majority," which predicted that demographic and social trends would turn parts of the country that were deep red, like the interior Mountain West, into Democratic-leaning states. The book was published shortly after Republicans took back the U.S. Senate in the 2002 midterm elections and was received skeptically.
Last year, Teixeira and a bevy of other researchers published a new book on the Mountain West as America's new swing region. Now there was little pushback.
Teixeira said the West's shift has been dramatic because of the heavy migration to the region. Another factor is the ballot initiative process, which magnifies political trends by making it easier to enact dramatic policy changes like marijuana legalization.
But he argued in an interview that what's happened to the West is not very different from what's taking place across the country. Surveys for his book last year found it only slightly more libertarian on social issues and holding similar views toward government and taxation as other parts of the country. That, he said, is bad news for Republicans ? their problem is national, not regional.
"It's not like there's something in the water in state X that's making them harder for Republicans," Teixeira said. "It's just the same series of changes that are working themselves out in all states."

I can?t help but think they would announce the arrival of a powerhouse.
Well, allow me the pleasure of breaking such an announcement. ?In case you missed it: a filmmaking renaissance is happening in The Bay Area. ?All of the following films that premiered at Sundance and won an award there had a major Bay Area connection: Fruitvale, Afternoon Delight,?Cutie and the Boxer, Inequality For All, and American Promise.
I don?t know when was the last time a film won both the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award at Sundance as Fruitvale?did this year. ?Not only is director Ryan Coogler from Oakland, not only was the story and subject from The Bay Area, not only was the film shot in The Bay Area, and not only was it mixed at Skywalker, but the San Francisco Film Society & The Kenneth Rainin Foundation granted the film $200,000.
If that wasn?t enough to crow about, allow me the thrill of mentioning that this is the second year in a row that a film supported by the?San Francisco Film Society?& The Kenneth Rainin Foundation won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance. ?Yup, Beasts Of The Southern Wild received similar support last year as Fruitvale?did this year. ?Do we need non-profit support in order to make ambitious socially relevant cinema in America? ?It sure damn looks that way, and if it is not necessary, it sure helps! ?A market-driven entertainment economy encourages one thing; if we want diversity we must support our cultural institutions (and build new ones!).
But allow me to go on with the glory that this year?s Sundance has bestowed upon the cities by The Bay? ?I don?t know when the last time a producer had both a documentary film and a narrative film in each of the Sundance competition. ?I definitely don?t think a producer who managed that feat ever won awards for both films (okay, I once had a film in each section, but only one of them one an award). ?Winning an award for each of their films is exactly what 72 Productions accomplished with Afternoon Delight?s Best Directing of a narrative film award (directed by Jill Soloway) and Inequality For All?s U.S. Documentary Special Jury Award (directed by Jacob Kornbluth). ?And did you know that 72 Productions? Jen Chaiken sits on the San Francisco Film Society?s Board of Directors? And that the SFFS was Inequality For All?s fiscal sponsor? ?Surely you know that I4A?s incredibly inspiring subject, Robert Reich, teaches and lives in Berkeley, and yup, that is in The Bay Area. I imagine your collective head is now reeling in wonder about what is happening here; I know I am impressed, verily.
Yes, it?s true that the Directing Award at Sundance is one of the great honors. ?Yes, the aforementioned?Afternoon Delight?won that award for Narrative, and Cutie and the Boxer, directed by Zachary Heinzerling, won for Documentary. The San Francisco Film Society?s Doc Film Fund gave?Cutie and the Boxer?s $50,000? ?That ain?t chicken feed. ?And that?s a Bay Area connection for both sections? Directing Award. ?It must be something in the water!
But The Bay Area?s dominance continues on from there. It kind of takes your breathe away, doesn?t it? ?The other winner of a Special Jury Prize For Documentary Film,?Joe Brewster and Mich?le Stephenson?s?American Promise, ?also received funding from The San Francisco Film Society. How great is it to give money ?away to films that lift our culture up? ?I suppose you don?t know that feeling until you?ve done it, but know what? ?You too can do it and I will tell you how below?

That is five films, six awards, at Sundance 2013 with Bay Area connections. ?Pretty awesome. ?In addition to all of that, the Bay Area was represented by other filmmakers at Sundance too; Rob Epstein?and Jeffrey Friedman were there with TWO films, one narrative, one doc: Lovelace and The Battle For AmFar. The list goes on and on and on.
That is not a rumbling you are feeling underground, that is the roar of a community?s heart beating as one, and quite rapidly at that mind you. ?You don?t just have to be from Poland to have that flutter (if you watched the Awards, you will understand the reference).
I think it is now abundantly clear that if you love independent film, if you want diverse, ambitious film to prosper, you have to act now. ?You must not delay. ?You can either pack your bags and get the hell out of town and arrive in Fog City or one of it?s many surrounding communities, or you can show your love for such cinema by helping to support the San Francisco Film Society. ?Either one will do. ?Just take some action. ?The momentum will carry you forward.

Every now and then we get a little angry, if something doesn't go our way of if another person ticks us off then it's understandable that we want to lash out because of our frustration. This is a perfectly natural human emotion. What happens though when we find it difficult to deal with our anger, what happens if we get more angry than usual? We all know someone who probably gets a little more than they possibly should when concerning certain things. It may be the case that they have an anger problem. While anger is a perfectly normal human emotion, if you don't deal with it in the right way, if you are unable to contain and control those feelings of anger, you could find yourself lashing out at those closest to you.
People with anger problems aren't able to deal with other emotions that could potentially damage their reputation or image. It's easier for this person to feel anger rather than shame or sadness. It could be that anger is the 'go to' emotion for any sort or negative influence on that person's life; so rather than deal with an emotion such as shame, that person decides that instead that he or she will simply get angry and lash out. In this example, anger is used as a defense mechanism to shield that person for feeling any pain and showing weakness.
These feelings of anger are not uncommon, in fact a recent study shows that almost a third of us know a close family member or friend who has problems dealing with anger. This can have a serious effect on our relationships with these people, you could find yourself working harder to keep these people happy in case they lash out or become angry again. The threat of physical or verbal abuse from these people is often great, and if you find yourself trapped in a relationship with a particularly angry person then it can be very difficult to get out of or talk to that other person about their anger issues.
The unfortunate thing about anger is that while it is a perfectly natural emotion, it can start a vicious cycle of anger. If a person who has trouble dealing with anger and over reacts at something small and lashes out, they can find themselves getting even angrier than before because they have lashed out in the first place. It can be hard to calm down and deal with these issues once this cycle is up and running, the person can find themselves in a whole heap of trouble as they forget what they got angry about in the first place and in turn become even angrier.
It seems that with people who suffer from anger issues, that anger is always the 'go to' emotion for any type of negative influence on their lives. When a problem or issue arises in their lives they don't stop or think about how they are going to deal with it, they just rummage around in the emotion drawer and pull out the first thing that comes to hand, anger. Once you've become used to dealing with everyday problems with anger then it can be difficult to stop. Anger is like a drug, when we're feeling angry it releases adrenaline into the bloodstream to get us pumped up. The body is forced to work harder and blood pressure is increased. We get a release from acting out in anger and working off this adrenaline, it is this release that people can become dangerously addicted to.
Not only is this psychologically damaging but it can also be detrimental to our health. Those that suffer from anger problems have been shown to have increased blood pressure and weaker hearts due to the organ having to deal with increased blood flow when that person gets angry. This can seriously decrease the life expectancy of that person.
Dealing with anger is never easy, but it is a necessity. If we fail to deal with our anger in the proper way then it can have serious effects on not only our relationships with other people, but also have a massive psychological and physiological effect on ourselves. There are now a number of different ways in which we can learn to deal with our anger such as anger management courses and group therapy where you can learn to deal with your anger in a number of different ways. Rather than reaching for anger at any opportunity you will learn how to control yourself and relax, it's about taking that second to think about what you're really doing and realising that anger isn't your only option, that you can deal with your emotions in a normal and rational manner.
There are ways of dealing with your anger, it's important to speak to the professionals and get help from anger management courses and psychologists.

Since I?m a new journalist in Israel who happens to love ice cream and arrived here with only one piece of furniture to my name, that would be grave indeed.
So I for one am grateful for Mr. Ben Yehuda, who was born 155 years ago today in the Russian empire.
Legend has it that the man was not only brilliant, but a little crazy. And you would have to be, if you were planning to try to resurrect an ancient language after roughly 2,000 years and expect it to become the primary spoken language of a country that didn't even exist yet.
But the Sorbonne-educated Ben Yehuda did just that ??well before the state of Israel was founded in 1948, and even before Lord Balfour of Britain made his famous promise to the Zionists in 1917 to help establish a Jewish homeland.
Of course, Hebrew was the language of the Torah ? the biblical books of Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy ? as well as other religious writings. So many Jews were familiar with it. But they didn?t use it to talk about things like grocery shopping or even politics.
Where to start? With your family, of course. When Ben Yehuda arrived in Israel with his family, he banned his wife and children from speaking any other language. According to tradition, his family was the first to speak exclusively Hebrew in the home.
He also helped start schools and Hebrew-language newspapers, and published the first dictionary of modern Hebrew, often drawing on biblical words to coin modern terms. Ultra-Orthodox Jews pushed back hard, arguing that Hebrew is a holy language and not to be used to discuss the mundane. Many of them still prefer to speak in Yiddish when discussing daily affairs.
But Hebrew is nevertheless the dominant language in Israel today, although Arabic is an official language as well.
But I digress.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Thousands of marchers rallied in Washington in favor of gun control on Saturday, including residents of Newtown, Connecticut, where a mass elementary school shooting reignited the U.S. gun violence debate.
Speakers - including Education Secretary Arne Duncan, lawmakers and actors - urged the protesters carrying such signs as "What Would Jesus Pack?" to lobby Congress and state legislators to back gun control measures.
Duncan, who said one student had died from guns every two weeks while he was chief executive of Chicago's public schools, denied that gun control was about limiting firearm rights guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution. Murders in that city last year rose to the highest level since 2008, according to police.
"This is about gun responsibility. This is about gun safety. This is about fewer dead Americans, fewer dead children, fewer children living in fear," Duncan said.
Organizers backed President Barack Obama's call for a ban on military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines and background checks for all gun sales. They also urged safety training for all buyers of firearms.
Marchers stretched for several blocks along Constitution Avenue as they approached the rally site in the shadow of the Washington Monument.
Participants included politicians from Maryland and the District of Columbia, including Washington Mayor Vincent Gray, as well as actress Kathleen Turner and Marian Wright Edelman, founder of the Children's Defense Fund.
90-MINUTE RALLY
The protest came a week after gun rights supporters held rallies across the United States to oppose firearms control.
The 90-minute rally was organized by Molly Smith, artistic director of Washington's Arena Stage, and her partner, and co-sponsored by One Million Moms for Gun Control, an advocacy group.
One Million Moms organized similar events on Saturday in about a dozen cities, including San Francisco and Austin, Texas.
About 100 residents of Newtown and surrounding areas attended the rally and march down Constitution Avenue. A gunman killed 20 first-graders and six adults on December 14 at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, and numerous speakers and marchers said that rampage had spurred them to act.
"It's difficult to get laws changed when politicians are bought out, but we have to start somewhere," said Amy Journo, 38, an occupational therapist whose two sons, ages 5 and 7, attended Sandy Hook.
"I want to ensure that they (children) are safer, not just my children but all across the United States," Journo said.
A spokesman for the U.S. Capitol Police declined to give an estimate of crowd size, citing department policy.
Obama's proposals, the most significant attempt at gun-control in decades, face an uphill battle in Congress. The proposals are strongly opposed by gun advocates, such as the powerful National Rifle Association.
The lobbying group has said that current laws need better enforcement, issues of mental health should be addressed and that tighter laws could not have prevented Newtown.
About 11,100 Americans died in gun-related killings in 2011, according to preliminary data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There were 19,766 suicides by firearms in 2011, the CDC said.

An endangered species is set to return to a Northumberland forest more than 30 years after it was wiped out.
Conservationists at Kielder Water & Forest Park plan to reintroduce water voles to the area after they disappeared.
The animals have not been spotted in the area since the 1970s.
Forestry Commission ecologist Tom Dearnley said they were "extremely keen" to see the project go ahead at Kielder.
Mr Dearnley said: "Areas like Kielder Burn and the North Tyne are good water vole habitats so we have a two-part plan which will hopefully see them return to former haunts.
"First we need to establish whether any mink remain as this was the reason for their previous decline.
"Water voles have suffered big declines across England, so returning them to the forest is something we are extremely keen to see happen."
Mink numbers at Kielder are now thought to be very low with few being spotted by rangers in recent years.
Steve Lowe, from the Northumberland Wildlife Trust, said a similar project had been carried out in the Cairngorms, which saw the water vole making an "impressive comeback".

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? The credibility of a 24-year-old heroin addict whose sex-abuse complaint took down a Roman Catholic church official in Philadelphia ? and helped bring thousands of secret church files to light ? is now in the hands of a jury.
The policeman's son came forward in 2009 with the stunning claim that he'd been raped as a boy by two priests and his sixth-grade teacher. A jury heard two weeks of evidence before deliberations in the case began Friday.
One priest facing five other complaints accepted a plea deal on the eve of trial and went to prison, yet denies any contact with the trial accuser. The remaining defendants, the Rev. Charles Engelhardt, 66, of Wyndmoor, and ex-teacher Bernard Shero, 49, of Levittown, have staked their case on the accuser. He's changed his story several times, in significant ways, since the disclosure.
In closing arguments Friday, prosecutor Mark Cipolletti pointed out the many civil lawyers in court representing financial interests of the Philadelphia archdiocese, Engelhardt's religious order, the accuser and others.
"That room is littered with lawyers," Cipolletti told jurors, pointing to the galley, where the gaunt, hollow-eyed accuser sat with his parents and fiancee.
"Ok, so he sued the archdiocese," Cipolletti said. "Who can blame him?"
The young man testified that the abuse started when Engelhardt caught him drinking altar wine in fifth grade. The priest showed him pornography, he said, and weeks later raped him in the sacristy, a church anteroom that connects with the parish school.
The 10-year-old, though small for his age, warned Engelhardt that if the priest touched him again, he would kill him, according to his testimony. Engelhardt never did, he said.
But he said Engelhardt told fellow priest Edward Avery about their "session," prompting Avery to twice assault the boy, and force him to perform a striptease act. A year later, Shero drove the boy home after detention, and raped him in a parking lot, he said.
"No dollar amount could fix this, and never could," Cipolletti argued.
Central details of the accuser's testimony last week differed from the account he first gave the archdiocese in 2009. He told the social worker he'd been raped for five hours by Engelhardt after Mass; beaten and tied with sashes by Avery; and raped by Shero at school.
"(He) is the walking, talking personification of reasonable doubt," defense lawyer Michael McGovern, who represents Engelhardt, argued Friday.
Shero's lawyer, in closings a day earlier, described his visually-impaired client as an easy target who'd been taunted by classmates growing up and by his own students as an adult. That portrait led Cipolletti to wonder why he went into teaching.
Reminding jurors of the big picture, McGovern urged jurors to resist the "groundswell presumption of guilt throughout this country" when priests are accused of molesting children.
Thousands of people have accused Catholic priests around the country of abuse, but the complaints were routinely locked in "secret archives," according to evidence that's emerged in litigation over the past decade. Several states, including Pennsylvania, have since extended the time limit for child sex-abuse victims to pursue criminal or civil action.
Philadelphia prosecutors saw their chance with the policeman's son, whose claims were still viable under the new statutes.
And because Avery had been transferred to the boy's parish despite an earlier, credible abuse complaint, they could charge Monsignor William Lynn, the secretary for clergy at the archdiocese, with child endangerment.
Lynn, 62, was convicted last year and is serving three to six years in prison.

Jan. 23, 2013 ? Scientists have made a 3D reconstruction of the remains of ampelosaur, found in 2007 in the site of Lo Hueco (Cuenca). The fossils are about 70 million years old (Late Cretaceous).
Up to now, only one species of the genus was known, Ampelosaurus atacis, which was discovered in France. The differences between the Spanish and the French fossils do not rule out that they could represent distinct species.
The researcher from the National Museum of Natural Sciences (CSIC) Fabien Knoll, who has conducted the investigation, considers that "more fossils are necessary to establish that we are dealing with a new species." For this reason, the team has identified the specimen as Ampelosaurus sp., which leaves open its specific identity.
Little evolved brain
The ampelosaur pertains to the sauropod group, large-sized dinosaurs that settled widely during the Mesozoic Era (which began 253 million years ago and ended 66 million years ago). More precisely, it is a titanosaur, a group of plant eating animals that were dominant during the last half of the Cretaceous (last period of the Mesozoic). The first sauropods appeared about 160 million years earlier than the ampelosaur.
However, despite being the product of a long evolution, the brain of the ampelosaur does not show any notable development. Knoll explains: "This saurian may have reached 15 m in length; nonetheless its brain was not in excess of 8 cm." According to the CSIC researcher: "Increase in brain size was not favored in the course of sauropod evolution."
Another of the characteristics yielded by the reconstruction of the Cuenca ampelosaur brain is the small size of the inner ear. According to Knoll: "This may suggest that the ampelosaur would not have been adapted to quickly move either its eyes or its head and neck."
In January of 2012, Knoll conducted the investigation that led to the reconstruction of another sauropod, Spinophorosaurus nigeriensis. The simulation in 3D of its brain revealed that that species, in contrast to what the study of the ampelosaur braincase demonstrated, presented a fairly well-developed inner ear.
According to the one of the researchers, "It is quite enigmatic that sauropods show such a diverse inner ear morphology whereas they have a very homogenous body shape; more investigation is definitely required."

(Reuters) - Videogame maker THQ Inc said it received court approval to sell its assets to various buyers for about $72 million and will split up following the sale.
The company will sell Relic Studios to Japanese video game software developer Sega Corp for $26.6 million while Koch Media GmbH will buy Volition Inc and video game "Metro: Last Light" for $22.3 million and $5.9 million, respectively.
Volition is the maker of THQ's best selling "Saints Row" series. The company's publishing businesses, Vigil Games and certain other intellectual properties were not part of the sale process.
"South Park: The Stick of Truth", a role-play video game based on the popular U.S. animated television series "South Park" is being sold to Ubisoft LLC for $3.3 million.
THQ received court approval earlier this month for a longer bankruptcy auction process that allowed other parties to bid for its assets, after it reached an agreement with a committee representing unsecured creditors.
The company appointed private investment firm Clearlake Capital Group as the "stalking horse" or lead bidder for the entire company and asked the court for an unusually quick auction.
The move was criticized by the company's unsecured creditors who said it gave an unfair advantage to Clearlake and was designed to specifically thwart other potential bidders.
"While we had hoped that the restructuring process would allow the company to remain intact, I am heartened that the majority of our studios and games will continue under new ownership," said THQ Chief Executive Brian Farrell.

We've learned much about the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 over the past week or so, from specs to a purported release date. Now we have what might be our first proper glimpse of the tablet itself out in the wild -- and it's packing a few surprises. In spy shots obtained by Italian outlet DDAY.it, we see an unknown Samsung tablet sporting a curved chassis similar to the Galaxy S3 and Note 2 -- a far cry from earlier Samsung tablet designs. The size of the tablet, and the "S Pen" holder shown in the bottom right in the pic above, would seem to confirm this as the Galaxy Note 8.0.
More surprising still is Samsung's apparent decision to eschew on-screen buttons in favor of a traditional menu, home and back setup. It's a break from usual Android tablet designs, though it could be argued that changes to Android's action bar in version 4.2 mean that on-screen controls are less important than they were back in the Honeycomb days.
We should also consider the possibility that this might not be the final Note 8.0 design. In the past, Samsung has craftily put out several pre-release versions of devices (like the Galaxy S3) in the hope of keeping the final design secret. Regardless, it's in Samsung's best interest, branding-wise, to make the Note 8.0 visually close to its smartphone line-up, and this kind of design certainly achieves that.
Previous rumors have the Galaxy Note 8.0 debuting at Mobile World Congress in late February ahead of a March launch. Reported specs include an 8-inch 1280x800 display, a 1.6GHz Exynos 4 Quad CPU, 2GB of RAM and TouchWiz'd Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. We'll be live in Barcelona next month to bring you full coverage of the Note 8.0 as it's announced.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) ? Two former members of the Church of Scientology claimed in a lawsuit filed Wednesday that the church and its affiliates deceived members into donating millions of dollars to misrepresented causes.
Luis and Maria Garcia of Irvine, Calif., filed the complaint in federal court in Tampa, near the church's national headquarters in Clearwater. The couple claims they were duped into giving more than $420,000 for a building campaign, disaster relief efforts and other Scientology causes, only to find the bulk of the money went to inflate the church coffers and line the pockets of its leader, David Miscavige.
"The church, under the leadership of David Miscavige, has strayed from its founding principles," the lawsuit claims, "and morphed into a secular enterprise whose primary purpose is taking people's money."
In an emailed statement, Scientology spokeswoman Pat Harney said the church had not yet been served with the lawsuit, but challenged any contention that money was misappropriated.
"We understand from media inquiries this has something to do with fundraising and we can unequivocally state all funds solicited are used for the charitable and religious purposes for which they were donated," Harney said.
The Garcias were 28-year members of the church, rising to upper levels of Scientology. They left in November 2010 over their disenchantment with its direction under Miscavige, who has led the church since founder L. Ron Hubbard's death in 1986.
The lawsuit names various trusts and nonprofits linked to Scientology as defendants and says they collectively engage in fraud, unfair and deceptive trade practices and breach of contract in their fundraising.
Attorney Theodore Babbitt of West Palm Beach, who is among those handling the suit, said it would be followed by other similar claims from former Scientologists. He said the Garcias still believe in the precepts of Scientology and that the litigation is not a commentary on whether it is a true religion, a question that has dogged it across the world since it was founded in the 1950s. Babbitt said, ultimately, that question is irrelevant when considering its members' donations.
"Whether you're a church or not a church, you can't defraud people," he said.
Harney called the lawsuit "frivolous."
"The statements to the media made today about the church and its ecclesiastical leader by these bitter individuals are blatantly false," she said.
Among the accusations made in the lawsuit is that the Garcias and others were repeatedly approached with urgent requests for funding of Scientology work around the globe, such as disaster relief or campaigns for causes such as ending child pornography. Babbitt said high-ranking former Scientologists would testify that the church knowingly rerouted such collections for other spending, including financing a "lavish lifestyle" for Miscavige, stifling inquiries into church activities and finances, and intimidating members and ex-members.
A common tactic, Babbitt said, when a disaster unfolded somewhere in the world, would be to send a small group of Scientologists with a camera crew that would pay locals in the affected area to appear on camera. A scene would essentially be staged, he claims, in which people would be begging or appear to be starving, even if it weren't the case.
A cornerstone of church practice is personal counseling sessions, known as auditing, in which members disclose many facets of their personal lives. Babbitt says members' own financial status and the accounts they hold would be known from those sessions and then be used in tandem with footage from disaster sites in desperate and urgent pleas for money.
"There's an emergency, we need your money right now, we know that you have X dollars in the bank in Los Angeles," Babbitt said, offering a paraphrase of how a member might be approached.
In the end, little if any of the money collected for such causes reached its intended place, he said. Those contributions, the lawsuit claims, were collected by a Scientology-linked group called IAS Administrations, which Babbitt says former church members will testify accumulated more than $1 billion in contributions.
The Garcias also claim to have prepaid for auditing and training services that were never provided and for which a refund has never been received, and to have given about $340,000 for the church's planned Super Power building for high-level coursework.
