Ugg Sales Are Down - Business Insider

Ugg boots, owned by Decker Outdoor Corp., reported earnings last week, and the results were bad.?

Profits were down 31 percent, mostly because women aren't buying Ugg boots. The company said it was going to slash prices to draw more interest to the boots, but even that isn't guaranteed to help.?

Until now, Ugg's biggest obstacle was image. The boots were seen as sloppy and something women wore with sweatpants.?

So Ugg started advertising in fashion magazines to seem more chic. Famous Vogue creative director Andre Leon Talley even came out to endorse the boots, wearing them at New York Fashion Week.?

Ugg also hired Tom Brady as a spokesmodel to try and draw men into its stores. So far that move has been successful, and sales are up with the male contingent.?

But Ugg faces a terrifying reality: women's boots might be going out of style.?

"The worst is yet to come,"?Sam Poser, an analyst at Sterne Agee, told the Huffington Post, adding that "weaker Uggs sales might not just be due to weather, but may indicate that the boots have fallen out of fashion."?

If that's true, Ugg's problems become a lot more daunting. While the company is making strides with men, women's boots make up the vast majority of its business.?

Women are unlikely to shell out for Ugg flats or loafers because they are already loyal to other brands. Boots are the core product.?

If boots are actually out of style, Ugg will have just have to wait for the fashion cycle to turn around.?

MetroPCS breaks 1 million LTE customers, makes $193 million profit despite losing 312,000 users in Q3

MetroPCS breaks 1 million LTE subscribers, makes a $193 million profit in Q3 2012

MetroPCS might be the smaller of the two parties in the proposed merger with T-Mobile, but it certainly knows how to coin a profit in difficult times. The carrier recorded a massive $193 million net profit this quarter, $44 million more than the $149 million it made in Q2, despite losing 312,000 subscribers in the three month period. The reason behind the rosy numbers was a combination of cash-saving exercises and canny investments in securities, pushing total revenue to $1.3 billion. The network now has just under nine million customers, with more than a million of those subscribing to one of the company's LTE packages. It's also managed to reduce churn down to 3.7 percent, a reduction of 0.8 percent since Q3 2011. CEO Roger D. Linquist remarked that the next quarter will see the business "re-energize" subscriber growth at the expense of its bottom line -- probably wise, given that it's lost just over half a million customers in the last six months.

43% of Small Businesses Spend 6+ Hours Per Week in Social ...

COMMENTS

Very informative. Can anybody tell how to collect such stats for the niche related to any business? That will be very informative for the new folks like me.
I love these infographics!?
?
I think this info is relevant for both online and offline marketers. It's interesting that most of the focus is on Facebook and Twitter. I understand Facebook but it seems weird that businesses are focusing more time on Twitter then they are on Facebook or Blog content...?
?
I definitely think spending time/money on blog content would be prioritized above Twitter in particular...?
?
I guess it depends on the business too.
Your web content is very useful and full of impactful content for a small business owner. Thank you!
Hello from the Cambridge Innovation Center (Hubspot?s old haunt!) Yes, social media can seem like a ?time suck? to some CEOs and they may say that they want to spend less time on social media but this is about education - if you asked CEOs if they wanted to look and use alternate ways to participate in discussion, drive engagement, increase visibility and sales and address customer service then the response may not be ?we want to spend less time on this?. With regards to which channels, this is all about understanding your target audiences and being present where they are, so to Facebook or not to Facebook (ooh, we feel a blog post coming on) is about the your industry, your audiences and your objectives.
Great Infographic with a lot of information. Thank you, that was helpful.
Interesting numbers and engagingly set out. My question is: what measurable results / ROI are they getting back? Would be great to out the activity in context
Is this B-to-C or B-to-B, I know from running my own B-to-B business that I use Linkedin far more frequently than Facebook or Twitter.
I think that 1/3 CEO statistic can be interpreted in different ways. I thought it meant that the CEO or the proprietor specifically wanted to spend less time on social media, and maybe give the role to someone else or to outsource. I thought it meant that, currently, many owners and CEOs do the social media, but don't want it as part of their duties.

Beautiful infograph! It's a positive sign that so many SBs are willing to invest money into their social media presence and shows that they understand the importance of social features including social, search, and content marketing.?
?
I think the percentage number for SB's using Facebook as their primary social media tool is pretty much the norm, wondering how their personal website or blog activity plays into these numbers.
Again, another informative piece, graphically displayed of course, and current. Thanks.
wowhh nice informative graphics.... Thank you buddy for sharing these kind of attractive content

MANHATTAN, Kan. -- A foundation for engineering and construction firm Black & Veatch has awarded Kansas State University a $200,000 grant to help develop solar-powered charging stations for electric and hybrid vehicles.

"We are very grateful to Black & Veatch for sharing our vision, and we are extremely excited about this corporate partnership and the research opportunities it will bring," said project leader Larry Erickson, professor of chemical engineering. "This grant will help us build on the academic strengths of the College of Engineering in the electrical power engineering program."

The solar panels will power charging stations for plug-in vehicles, and they will provide shade from the sun and protection from rain, snow and ice. The Kansas State University stations will be used for research, development, education and charging vehicles.

The project will allow researchers to better understand the technical, social, environmental and economic issues surrounding plug-in vehicles. Possible research topics include the environmental impact, consumer attitudes and the distribution of electricity.

"The research opportunities are endless for our faculty members and their students," Erickson said. "We already have faculty across the university who are interested in developing research using these stations, including those who specialize in engineering, economics, computer science and psychology."

The grant comes as auto manufacturers have released plug-in models like the all-electric Ford Focus, Chevrolet Volt and Nissan Leaf. The federal government is requiring that auto manufacturers nearly double the average fuel economy of their fleets by 2025.

Electric vehicles have the potential to address some issues associated with combustion-engine vehicles, Erickson said.

"The operating cost of vehicles is significantly less with electrical energy, and this advantage is expected to grow in the future," he said. "Petroleum supplies are finite and will last longer for future generations and be less expensive if we make greater use of solar and electrical energy."

Solar-powered vehicles can reduce air emissions and improve air quality, Erickson said.

"If 200 million solar-powered charging stations are put in place over the next 20 years and if we have more than 50 percent of vehicles with plug-in capability, this would change transportation and greenhouse gas emissions significantly," he said.

Project leaders plan to explore a time line, design and site for the project, which was first investigated in 2009 by participants in the National Science Foundation's Research Experience for Undergraduates. Kansas State University hosts students from other campuses during the summer who participate in research projects.

Overland Park-based Black & Veatch has committed to invest $1 million in future earnings to the university system in Kansas through Black & Veatch's Building a World of Difference Foundation. The grants fund research and development for new technologies in clean energy, safe water and advanced communications infrastructure.

What Makes an Entrepreneur?

A model of entrepreneurship where real innovation happens in the space between insanity and reality ? presented as a Venn Diagram. Via Flickr user michaellewkowitz

Previous: Week One: Reaching out to Entrepreneurs of the Future

The term ?entrepreneur? is a phrase that seems to be thrown around, I use it, StartUp Britain uses it, everybody uses it, but does anybody actually know what it means?

The dictionary defines an entrepreneur as;

?a?person?who?organizes?and?manages?any?enterprise, especially?a?business,?usually?with?considerable?initiative and?risk.?

But to me, an entrepreneur is a maverick, a business owner who lights up a room with enthusiasm and passion ? they?re bold, brave and bright. They?re not always rich and successful, but they look at the world in a unique way, and I can spot one a mile off.

Some however, take a different approach. Matt Lane from BeerBods believes that anyone who has?moulded?an idea for business into a reality is an entrepreneur. Whether to friends, and family, or to a mass market. But I have to disagree, and Neil Barnfather agrees with me. In his latest blog he explains his opinion that to be a true entrepreneur you must have started serial businesses.

? the entrepreneur is ?permanently pedantic? ? Matthew Allen

Why? Because the entrepreneurial spirit does not allow for satisfaction, it itches for more. It is not fulfilled by creating just one business, it searches for more problems to be fixed, and it must fix it itself. Matthew Allen of Allen IP phrased this very succinctly when he said that the entrepreneur is ?permanently pedantic?. There seems to be a synthesis of views from everybody I spoke to on this point ? both Neil and Matt and several others whom I spoke to on the topic stated that entrepreneurialism is a ?methodology? ? a unique approach to the world.

Enough of the fancy words. Let?s break down what really makes an entrepreneur:

  • Passion ? an entrepreneur must have a passion for the world, and making it a better place ? spotting where things could be improved.
  • Drive ? an entrepreneur must have the drive and dedication to make their business succeed, a running capacity of 120%.
  • Confidence ? this comes hand in hand with passion and drive ? you must have the confidence to communicate your passion and drive to others.
  • Taking a financial risk ? I?m not talking silly ?all on red? financial risk ? but they must believe in their business enough to take a financial plunge.
  • Successes and failures ? the most successful entrepreneurs have a few failed ideas under their belt. It?s all trial and error.

If you?re an entrepreneur you probably wont have:

  • A life ? I?m not joking. You live for your work.
  • The ability to let others take control ? you?re the best at everything, obviously.

If an entrepreneur?s brain were spliced, I think it would look a lot like this lovely infographic:

Courtesy of firmology.com

Maybe I have a skewed, majestic view of what an entrepreneur is, but I think Neil sums my interpretation up brilliantly when he said that there is ?no such thing as an unemployed entrepreneur?. What do you think?

Mourdock's comments on rape, pregnancy criticized

NEW ALBANY, Ind. (AP) ? Indiana Republican Senate candidate Richard Mourdock said Tuesday when a woman becomes pregnant during a rape, "that's something God intended."

Mourdock, who's been locked in one of the country's most watched Senate races, was asked during the final minutes of a debate with Democratic challenger Rep. Joe Donnelly whether abortion should be allowed in cases of rape or incest.

"I struggled with it myself for a long time, but I came to realize that life is that gift from God. And, I think, even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen," Mourdock said.

Mourdock became the second GOP Senate candidate to find himself on the defensive over comments about rape and pregnancy. Missouri Senate candidate Rep. Todd Akin said during a television interview in August that women's bodies have ways of preventing pregnancy in cases of what he called "legitimate rape." Since his comment, Akin has repeatedly apologized but has refused to leave his race despite calls to do so by leaders of his own party, from GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney on down.

It was not immediately clear what effect Mourdock's comments might have during the final two weeks before the Nov. 6 election. But they could prove problematic. Romney distanced himself from Mourdock on Tuesday night ? a day after a television ad featuring the former Massachusetts governor supporting the GOP Senate candidate began airing in Indiana.

"Gov. Romney disagrees with Richard Mourdock's comments, and they do not reflect his views," Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul said in an email to The Associated Press. Romney aides would not say whether the ad would be pulled and if the Republican presidential nominee would continue to support Mourdock's Senate bid.

Other Republicans did not immediately weigh in. Indiana Republican Party spokesman Pete Seat referred comment to the Mourdock campaign. A spokesman for the National Republican Senatorial Committee and a spokeswoman for Romney did not immediately return a request for comment Tuesday night.

National Democrats quickly picked up on Mourdock's statement and used it as an opportunity to paint him as an extreme candidate, calling him a tea party "zealot." DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz described Mourdock's comments as "outrageous and demeaning to woman" and called on Romney to take his pro-Mourdock ad off the air.

Later Tuesday after the debate, Mourdock further explained he did not believe God intended the rape, but that God is the only one who can create life.

"Are you trying to suggest somehow that God preordained rape, no I don't think that," said Mourdock. "Anyone who would suggest that is just sick and twisted. No, that's not even close to what I said."

In response, Donnelly said after the debate in southern Indiana that he doesn't believe "my God, or any God, would intend that to happen.".

Along with Romney's ad, top Republicans have been flocking to Indiana as part of an effort to break open the high-stakes Senate. Republicans need to gain three seats, or four if President Barack Obama wins re-election, and seats that were predicted to remain or turn Republican have grown uncertain.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell came to Indianapolis for a fundraiser Monday, and Arizona Sen. John McCain and South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham campaigned for Mourdock last week. New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte is due in the state Wednesday.

Romney's coattails carry special significance in deeply conservative Indiana, where Mourdock has underperformed Romney by 12 points in most public polls. Karl Rove's Crossroads GPS also has bought another $1 million of airtime in Indiana, making his group the biggest player in Indiana's Senate race. A message left for Crossroads GPS spokesman Nate Hodson was not immediately returned.

Al-Qaida in Afghanistan is attempting a comeback

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? A diminished but resilient al-Qaida, whose 9/11 attacks drew America into its longest war, is attempting a comeback in Afghanistan's mountainous east even as U.S. and allied forces wind down their combat mission and concede a small but steady toehold to the terrorist group.

That concerns U.S. commanders, who have intensified strikes against al-Qaida cells in recent months. It also undercuts an Obama administration narrative portraying al-Qaida as battered to the point of being a nonissue in Afghanistan as Western troops start leaving.

When he visited Afghanistan in May to mark the one-year anniversary of the U.S. raid that killed Osama bin Laden, President Barack Obama said his administration had turned the tide of war. "The goal that I set ? to defeat al-Qaida, and deny it a chance to rebuild ? is within reach," he said.

As things stand, however, an unquestionably weakened al-Qaida appears to have preserved at least limited means of regenerating inside Afghanistan as U.S. influence in the country wanes. The last U.S. combat troops are scheduled to be gone by Dec. 31, 2014, and security matters turned over to the Afghan government.

"They are trying to increase their numbers and take advantage of the Americans leaving," the police chief of Paktika province, Gen. Dawlat Khan Zadran, said through a translator in an interview this month in the governor's compound. He mentioned no numbers, but said al-Qaida has moved more weapons across the border from Pakistan.

For years the main target of U.S.-led forces has been the Taliban, rulers of Afghanistan and protectors of al-Qaida before the U.S. invasion 11 years ago. But the strategic goal is to prevent al-Qaida from again finding haven in Afghanistan from which to launch attacks on the U.S.

Al-Qaida's leadership fled in late 2001 to neighboring Pakistan, where it remains.

The group remains active inside Afghanistan, fighting U.S. troops, spreading extremist messages, raising money, recruiting young Afghans and providing military expertise to the Taliban and other radical groups.

U.S. Gen. John Allen, the top commander of international forces in Afghanistan, has said al-Qaida has re-emerged, and although its numbers are small, he says the group doesn't need a large presence to be influential.

U.S. officials say they are committed, even after the combat mission ends in 2014, to doing whatever it takes to prevent a major resurgence. The Americans intend, for example, to have special operation forces at the ready to keep a long-term lid on al-Qaida inside Afghanistan.

"Al-Qaida could try to reconstitute itself, but they would do so at their own peril given the intense pressure they and other terrorist groups are facing in Afghanistan," Pentagon press secretary George Little said Saturday.

A more immediate worry is the threat posed by the growing presence of al-Qaida and affiliated groups in Yemen, Somalia and across a broad swath of North Africa, where it is believed al-Qaida-linked militants may have been responsible for the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that killed U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans.

U.S. and Afghan officials say al-Qaida also has been building ties with like-minded Islamic militant groups present in Afghanistan, including Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, which is blamed for the November 2008 rampage in Mumbai, India, that killed 166 people, and the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, which is present in the north.

Ahmadullah Mowahed, a member of the Afghan parliament from the eastern province of Nuristan, along the Pakistan border, said he fears the departure of American combat forces will open the way for the Taliban and al-Qaida to overwhelm the provincial government.

"As soon as they leave, the eyes of al-Qaida will quickly focus on Nuristan," he said.

U.S. analysts say there is reason for concern that al-Qaida is down, but not out.

"They've been hit hard in a few cases, but they definitely are involved in the fight ? absolutely," said Seth G. Jones, a senior political scientist at RAND Corp.

Jones, a former adviser to the commander of U.S. special operations forces in Afghanistan, recently returned from a trip to eastern Afghanistan where he learned that al-Qaida's support network has expanded and its relations with groups such as the Pakistani-based Haqqani network are strong.

"That's a very serious concern because that kind of environment would allow al-Qaida to continue to operate, at least at a small level, because it's a workable environment for them, he said.

Richard Barrett, head of a U.N. group that monitors the threat posed by al-Qaida and the Taliban, said al-Qaida fears the Taliban will strike a deal with the Afghan government that would make the group all but irrelevant.

"So they will be doing whatever they can to assert their influence, to assert their presence" in Afghanistan, he said.

At least for now, al-Qaida in Afghanistan has no capability to launch attacks on the U.S., although commanders are taking no chances.

Little-noticed fragmentary U.S. military accounts of raids and strikes against al-Qaida in the northeastern provinces of Kunar and Nuristan show the group retains a command structure inside Afghanistan. On May 27 the U.S. killed the No. 2 commander in Afghanistan, Saudi national Sakhr al-Taifi, in Kunar, but it has yet to catch up to the top al-Qaida commander in the country, identified by U.S. officials as Farouk al-Qahtani, who resides in Nuristan.

In early September the international military coalition announced the death of an al-Qaida operative, Abu Saif, described as an associate of an al-Qaida leader killed along with several of his fighters July 1 in Kunar. Saif was called a conduit between senior al-Qaida leaders in Pakistan and Afghanistan, passing messages between them. In the most recent strike, officials said Sept. 27 they killed al-Qaida "facilitator" Abdul Rauf in Kunar. He was a Pakistani coordinator of foreign fighters' movements into Afghanistan and a builder of improvised explosive devices for attacks on coalition troops.

Interviews with Afghan officials suggest that al-Qaida also is present in other parts of the country, including the northwestern province of Faryab as well as Logar province, just south of Kabul.

Logar's provincial chief of police, Gen. Ghulam Sakhi Roogh Lawanay, said it is difficult to know how many militants are directly affiliated with al-Qaida, but he estimated their numbers in Logar at 100 to 150.

"Al-Qaida is very active. It is like fish. When one fish dies, another comes," he said in a recent interview. "The determination of these Arab fighters is high."

In interviews in Kabul and Washington, U.S. officials said they are satisfied that al-Qaida is so small inside Afghanistan ? they put the number at between 50 and 100 fighters ? that they can be contained indefinitely if the Afghan government allows U.S. counterterrorism forces to monitor and hunt the remnants. U.S. and Afghan officials are working to craft talks on a bilateral security agreement that could include such an arrangement.

Al-Qaida's numbers, however, don't tell the whole story.

Allen has said al-Qaida has learned to leverage its presence in Afghanistan to give the impression of having withstood U.S. military might and to burnish its image as a global force.

U.S. commanders say they will keep pressure on al-Qaida to frustrate its goals, but few believe al-Qaida will be gone before U.S. troops leave.

"I see no evidence to suggest that it will be eliminated by 2014," said Jones, the RAND analyst.

Brasserie Malmaison Review | A Girl Has to Eat - Restaurant ...

The Malmaison Hotel in Clerkenwell has a lovely little spot overlooking the adorable greens of Charterhouse Square. A self-styled luxury hotel, the Victorian exterior of the hotel is charming and inviting. The limited road access to the hotel also helps to ensure low noise levels.

Once inside, you hit the lobby, and to the right are stairs leading down to the brasserie in the basement. In contrast to the exterior, the restaurant?s d?cor looked tired and the lighting could have been better.

We started with a reasonably priced Cornish crab starter (?9.50). There was a lovely fresh, sweetness in the crab which had been dressed with a mint and shallot dressing. However deep-fried avocado fritters proved bland. The dish would have worked better with a no-frills simple accompaniment of ripe avocado.

Crab salad

Crab salad

From the specials, squid with chorizo (?6.95) went down less well. Containing both deep-fried and grilled squid, the former was tender whereas the latter was overdone and chewy. Furthermore, the chorizo did not pack a deep smoky flavour.

I usually dread ordering chicken at a restaurant as it typically lends itself to being overdone. But the half roasted Normandy chicken (?14.95) proved to be rather moist and tasty. The accompanying bread sauce was bland however, and there was a hint of bitterness in the roasting juices.

C?te de boeuf (400gm) ? dry aged prime rib steak served on the bone (?27.95) was tender and satisfying. But being quite thinly cut, it erred more on the side of medium than the requested medium rare. Nevertheless, the steak was of a great quality and very tasty.

Sides of steamed spinach, grilled garlic & chilli flat cap mushroom, young carrots with chervil butter (all ?3.25) were all nicely done.

Sticky toffee pudding (?6.95) with a pecan caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream was rather yummy. The caramel sauce was rich, sweet and decadent and really hit the spot.

On the whole, the food at Malmaison Brasserie was nicely done and tasty, if somewhat uninspired. The restaurant also lacked for atmosphere so it doesn?t make for a destination restaurant. But if I were staying at the hotel and looking for somewhere convenient to eat, I would have no qualms eating at the Brasserie either. We found the table service attentive, but the bar service less so.

3 British men go on trial over alleged terror plot

LONDON (AP) ? Three young British Muslim men went on trial in London on Monday, accused of plotting to set off multiple bombs in terrorist strikes that prosecutors say could have been deadlier than the 2005 London transit attacks.

Prosecutors allege that the men, fired up by the sermons of a US.-born al-Qaida preacher, hoped to cause carnage on a mass scale. But their plot was undone by mishaps with money and logistics, and ended in a police counterterrorism swoop last year.

Prosecution lawyer Brian Altman told a jury that Irfan Khalid and Ashik Ali, both 27, and 31-year-old Irfan Naseer, were central players in a plan to mount a terrorist attack "on a scale potentially greater than the London bombings in July 2005."

Fifty-two commuters were killed when four al-Qaida-inspired suicide bombers blew themselves up on London's bus and subway network on July 7, 2005.

The suspects are among a group of men and one woman arrested in September 2011 in the central English city of Birmingham. All three are charged with preparing for terrorism by plotting a bombing campaign, recruiting others and fundraising. Khalid and Naseer also are accused of traveling to Pakistan for terrorism training.

They have pleaded not guilty.

Altman said the three were key figures in a plan to detonate up to eight knapsack bombs in a suicide attack, or to explode timer bombs in crowded areas "in order to cause mass deaths and casualties."

"One of them was even to describe their plan as 'another 9/11,'" he said.

Prosecutors say targets and other details had not been finalized when the men were arrested.

The three defendants sat quietly and appeared to follow proceedings closely from the dock at London's high-security Woolwich Crown Court. The trial is due to last several weeks.

Altman said the trio were the senior members of a home-grown terror cell inspired by the anti-Western sermons of U.S.-born Islamist cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, who was killed in Yemen in September 2011.

Altman said Naseer and Khalid traveled to Pakistan for terror training, where they learned details of poisons, bomb-making and weapons use and made "martyrdom videos" justifying their planned attacks.

On their return in July 2011, he said, they began to recruit others to the plot and to raise money by posing as street collectors for Muslim charities. Altman accused the men of "despicably stealing from their own community" to fund their plot.

They also began experimenting with chemicals "to make an explosive mixture for use in an improvised explosive device," the prosecutor said, aided by Naseer's academic background ? he has a degree in pharmacy.

Many of the group's plans soon went awry, however. Four other young men dispatched by the plotters to Pakistan for terrorist training were sent home within days when the family of one man found out, Altman said. They have pleaded guilty to terrorism-related offenses.

Rahin Ahmed, an alleged co-conspirator described in court as the cell's "chief financier," attempted to increase the group's budget by trading the money it had made through bogus charity fundraising on the financial markets.

He lost the bulk of the terror cell's money through his "unwise and incompetent" trading, the prosecutor said.

Ahmed has pleaded guilty to supporting terrorism. He has not yet been sentenced.

Complete mitochondrial genome sequences of ancient New Zealanders

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? In a landmark study, University of Otago researchers have achieved the feat of sequencing complete mitochondrial genomes for members of what was likely to be one of the first groups of Polynesians to settle New Zealand and have revealed a surprising degree of genetic variation among these pioneering voyagers.

The Otago researchers' breakthrough means that similar DNA detective work with samples from various modern and ancient Polynesian populations might now be able to clear up competing theories about the pathways of their great migration across the Pacific to New Zealand.

Results from the team's successful mapping of complete mitochondrial genomes of four of the Rangitane iwi tupuna (ancestors) who were buried at a large village on Marlborough's Wairau Bar more than 700 years ago will be published online in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

Study director Professor Lisa Matisoo-Smith explains that mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is only inherited through the mother's side and can be used to trace maternal lineages and provide insights into ancient origins and migration routes.

"We found that three of the four individuals had no recent maternal ancestor in common, indicating that these pioneers were not simply from one tight-knit kin group, but instead included families that were not directly maternally related. This gives a fascinating new glimpse into the social structure of the first New Zealanders and others taking part in the final phases of the great Polynesian migration across the Pacific."

The researchers discovered that the four genomes shared two unique genetic markers found in modern Maori while also featuring several previously unidentified Polynesian genetic markers. Intriguingly, they also discovered that at least one of the settlers carried a genetic mutation associated with insulin resistance, which leads to Type 2 diabetes.

"Overall, our results indicate that there is likely to be significant mtDNA variation among New Zealand's first settlers. However, a lack of genetic diversity has previously been characterised in modern-day Maori and this was thought to reflect uniformity in the founding population.

"It may be rather that later decimation caused by European diseases was an important factor, or perhaps there is actually still much more genetic variation today that remains to be discovered. Possibly, it may have been missed due to most previous work only focusing on a small portion of the mitochondrial genome rather than complete analyses like ours."

Professor Matisoo-Smith and colleagues including ancient DNA analysis expert Dr Michael Knapp used Otago's state-of-the-art ancient DNA research facilities to apply similar techniques that other scientists recently employed to sequence the Neanderthal genome.

"We are very excited to be the first researchers to successfully sequence complete mitochondrial genomes from ancient Polynesian samples. Until the advent of next generation sequencing techniques, the highly degraded state of DNA in human remains of this age has not allowed such genomes to be sequenced," she says.

Now that the researchers have identified several unique genetic markers in New Zealand's founding population, work can begin to obtain and sequence other ancient and modern DNA samples from Pacific islands and search for these same markers.

"If such research is successful, this may help identify the specific island homelands of the initial canoes that arrived in Aotearoa/New Zealand 700 years ago," she says.

This research is the most recent output from the Wairau Bar Research Group, a collaboration between Otago researchers and Rangitane-ki-Wairau. The Otago research team is led by archaeologist Professor Richard Walter (Department of Anthropology and Archaeology), and biological anthropologists Associate Professor Hallie Buckley and Professor Matisoo-Smith (Department of Anatomy).

Background information

First excavated over 70 years ago, the Wairau Bar site is one of the most important archaeological sites in New Zealand because of its age and the range of material found there.

It is the site of a fourteenth century village occupied by some of the first generations of people who settled New Zealand. The material excavated from the site, most of which is now cared for in the collections at Canterbury Museum, provided the first conclusive evidence that New Zealand was originally settled from East Polynesia.

This discovery was first reported to the NZ public in 1950 by the late Dr Roger Duff, Director of Canterbury Museum, in his ground breaking book The Moahunter Period of Maori Culture. The principal evidence for his conclusions was in the artefacts found; however, the site also contained a large number of human burials.

Between 1938 and 1959 a total of 44 graves were excavated from the site and the grave contents taken to Canterbury Museum for study. For many years Marlborough Iwi, Rangitane, sought to have the remains repatriated so they could be reburied in the site and an agreement was reached with Canterbury Museum.

The reburial took place in April 2009, following earlier archaeological investigations of the site undertaken in collaboration with Rangitane.

A University of Otago-led multidisciplinary team of scientists have been analysing tooth samples recovered from the koiwi tangata (human remains) of the Rangitane iwi tupuna prior to their reburial. This work includes studies of the diet and health of the tupuna.

Late Eli-Cruz bomb lifts Giants over 'Skins

Wide receiver catches 77-yard touchdown pass with 1:13 left to win it

Victor Cruz runs away from Redskins defenders Madieu Williams (41) and Josh Wilson (26) on a 77-yard touchdown late in the game.

updated 6:26 p.m. ET Oct. 21, 2012

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - While Robert Griffin III is quickly becoming the NFL's most exciting quarterback, there's none better than Eli Manning with the game on the line.

Manning one-upped the Washington Redskins' rookie sensation with a pinpoint 77-yard scoring pass to Victor Cruz with 1:13 to play and the New York Giants overcame a late touchdown toss by Griffin to defeat the Washington Redskins 27-23 on Sunday.

"With our offense and Eli at the helm, we're never too worried," Cruz said. "No matter what situation we're in, no matter how many points we need or a field goal we need, we have the confidence we can do it. We have a lot of confidence in each other, and in Eli."

The winning drive was the 22nd of Manning's career in either the fourth quarter or overtime, his second this season and eighth over the past two seasons. This pass might have been one of the most improbable.

It came two plays and 19 seconds after Griffin capped what was a potential winning, 77-yard drive with a 30-yard touchdown toss to Santana Moss. The rookie had kept the drive alive with a 19-yard pass off a desperate scramble on a fourth-and-10 play deep in his own territory, and a 24-yard run on the next play.

"He has done it so many times," veteran Giants defensive tackle Chris Canty said of the two-time Super Bowl MVP. "He has really bridged his performance in the 2011 season to the 2012 season. It's just more of the same. He continues to get better. He is probably the most deadly quarterback in the fourth quarter."

Redskins coach Mike Shanahan agreed even though he was miffed that defensive backs Josh Wilson and Madieu Williams allowed Cruz to blow by them on the seam pattern.

"He sure proved it today," Shanahan said after his team (3-4) blew a chance to move into a tie for first place in the NFC East. "It was a great throw. He was double- covered but (Manning) put it right on the money."

Manning, who finished 26 of 40 for 337 yards, had to make the throw a little sooner than he wanted.

"I kind of threw it high and deep and saw the coverage and was hoping Victor saw it the same way I did," he said. "I didn't see the ball get caught. I heard the cheer and that was a good sign. I got up in time to see him run into the end zone."

Manning triumphantly pumped his fist once after the play as the more than 80,000 fans at MetLife Stadium erupted with cheers.

"He did a good job leading his team to victory today," said Griffin, who ran for 89 yards and passed for 258 and two touchdowns. "When the game is on the line, you want the ball in your hand, no doubt about it. He made the play to win it."

Griffin had Washington moving when Moss was tackled by Chase Blackburn after an 11-yard reception and rookie Jayron Hosley recovered at the Washington 43.

"There's no excuse for them, but with all that stuff, we had a chance to win at the end," Griffin said.

The wild finish capped a game in which both quarterbacks also made major mistakes.

Ahmad Bradshaw and Andre Brown scored on 1-yard runs and Lawrence Tynes kicked a pair of field goals for the Giants, who won despite giving up 480 yards in total offense.

Griffin was 20 of 28 with Moss catching both his TD passes. Fellow rookie Alfred Morris gained 120 yards rushing.

The Giants had 396 yards in total offense, with the biggest chunk coming on Manning's pass to Mr. Salsa.

Before the wild finish, the second half was dominated by turnovers.

Griffin was picked off by safety Stevie Brown and his 41-yard return late in the third quarter set up Bradshaw's 1-yard plow-job into the end zone, a play which was reviewed.

Griffin moved Washington into position to tie the game on the next possession, but he fumbled after being sacked by Jason Pierre-Paul and Linval Joseph recovered the ensuring fumble at the Giants 29.

On the next play from scrimmage, linebacker Rob Jackson intercepted a quick out by Manning and Forbath kicked a 45-yard field goal to narrow the lead to 20-16 with 5:21 to go.

The Giants were forced to punt on their next series and Washington got the ball back at its 23. After gaining nothing in three plays, Griffin went back to pass on fourth down, eluded Pierre-Paul and then danced around long enough to find tight end Logan Paulsen for a 19-yard gain and a first down at the 42. The 24-yard scamper got the ball to the New York 34 and two plays later Moss beat Hosley and hauled in Griffin's perfect pass as Griffin lay on his back and celebrated like a snow angel.

"He's tough," Blackburn said of Griffin. We played well for three downs got them into a fourth and 10, and had him. JPP had him dead to rights. Any other quarterback and he makes that sack."

Manning and Cruz spoiled the afternoon seconds later.

There were seven offensive possessions in the first half that resulted in 439 total yards, six scores and a 13-13 tie.

NOTES: Washington TE Fred Davis suffered an Achilles tendon injury and will miss the rest of the season. ...Redskins LB London Fletcher, who has played in 231 straight games, suffered a leg-hamstring injury in the second half. ...The Redskins gained a season-high 248 yards rushing. ... Bradshaw gained 43 yards rushing after collecting 316 in the past two games. ...Cruz led the Giants with seven catches for 131 yards. ...New York had three sacks, and allowed its first in four games.
