Nathan & Heather's Cozy Vintage Ballard Home House Tour ...

HeatherPhillips-housetour-1.jpg

Name: Nathan & Heather Spaulding
Location: Ballard ? Seattle, Washington
Size: 2 Bedroom- 900 square feet
Years lived in: 1.5 years ? Rent

Nathan and Heather live in a cozy two bedroom apartment in Ballard, where they have designed the vintage whimsy home they've always wanted. Here, art and creativity abound as their apartment is furnished generously with vintage estate sale goodness.

heatherphillips-thumbs.jpg

Married for three years, Nathan and Heather clearly love vintage and collecting second hand pieces from family, estate sales and second hand shops. "Nathan works as a Site Lead and Carpenter for a residential remodeling company. Heather has an apparel design background but decided to switch careers for a breath and is currently managing a large apartment complex in Ballard. We are moving to Los Angeles in October and are looking for jobs!! We can't wait!" Living in the Pacific Northwest has its effect on designing a home. "Because of the Scandinavian history of Ballard we found many of our nautical pieces from local estate sales and vintage shops. And because we don't love spending our time outside in the overcast cold drizzle our apartment has to be warm and inviting so we don't go crazy!"

They believe strongly that designing a home depends heavily on accommodating flow and seating. Also they attribute their happy environment to the good lighting and ample windows. When I asked what were the most significant things in their house they noted the dining table which had great sentimental value. "This was our first furniture purchase together. It was in mint condition, made in Seattle by Arrowline, Inc. in 1961. The family who owned this was expecting family from the Midwest in 1961 so the father decided to refurnish their whole house. He passed away only months later and the table sat virtually unused for almost 50 years. We cherish it and are happy to bring new life to it. "

Thanks to Sophie and Isaac Carpenter for introducing me to Heather and Nathan!

Book on Mossad confirms Israel assassinated Iranian nuclear scientists

Home ? World News

By Jean Shaoul
30 July 2012

Spies Against Armageddon: Inside Israel?s Secret Wars states unequivocally that Mossad, Israel?s intelligence agency, assassinated five of Iran?s top nuclear scientists over the last five years, as part of a broader campaign aimed at sabotaging the country?s nuclear programme.

It is already widely acknowledged that the Western powers are mounting a covert terrorist campaign to destroy Iran?s nuclear infrastructure. But new allegations by authors Yossi Melman, a leading Israeli military and intelligence journalist who writes for Ha?aretz, and Dan Raviv, a CBS national political correspondent, reveal that the assassinations were all carried out by Mossad operatives who used ?safe houses? maintained inside Iran since the Shah?s era.

These were not contract killings, but ?blue and white? operations?a reference to the colour of Israel?s flag. Mossad operatives from Kidon, a unit responsible for assassinations and kidnappings, conducted the murders.

The authors of Spies Against Armageddon are not left-wingers seeking to expose Mossad?s criminality. They glorify its services to Israel. Melman is on record as supporting an Israeli pre-emptive strike on Iran, penning an article in Ha?aretz in April 2009 headlined, ?I would advise Netanyahu to attack Iran?Such a move would serve the interests of the West and the Arab world, but they can ill afford to admit it?.

The book suggests that most of the assassins were Israelis of Iranian origin who probably held dual nationality and an Iranian passport. Tens of thousands of Iranian Jews left Iran after the 1979 revolution, many moving to Israel. Mossad selected and trained a few of them or their Farsi-speaking children. These agents have been able to access Iran regularly by numerous routes, including the Kurdish region and some of the states in the Caspian Basin, such as Azerbaijan, with which Israel has close relations.

US State Department cables in 2007 released by Wikileaks indicate that Mossad had planned to use its established links with disaffected minority groups in Iran?Baluchi, Azeri and Kurdish minorities, including Islamist groups?to delay Iran?s nuclear project. Mossad chief Meir Dagan rejected subcontracting such sensitive missions as assassinations in Iran?s capital to mercenaries.

The book makes clear that Washington was well aware of Mossad?s campaign of ?covert measures? and ?counter-proliferation?, if not the timing and specific details, so that the White House could preserve deniability.

Last December, nuclear scientist Professor Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan, 32, was killed in a car bomb in Tehran after a motorcyclist was seen attaching a magnetic device to his car. The bomb killed Roshan?s bodyguard, who was driving the car, and wounded an 85-year-old passerby. Roshan was a professor at a Tehran technical university and a supervisor at the uranium enrichment facility in Natanz. He had met with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors days before he was assassinated

In January 2010, a remote-controlled bomb killed Massoud Ali Mohammadi, a Tehran University nuclear scientist.

In November 2010, another car bomb blast killed Majid Shahriyari, a professor of nuclear engineering at Shahid Behest University.

An attempt to kill Feredeyoun Abbasi-Davani, the head of the physics department at Imam Hossein University, failed because he jumped out of his car in time.

In July 2011, gunmen in Tehran shot physicist Dr. Darioush Rezai.

Another scientist died supposedly as a result of carbon monoxide from a heater in his home.

There have been a series of unexplained explosions at Iranian military sites. A November 12, 2011, explosion destroyed the Iranian Revolutionary Guard base at Bid Kaneh, killing 17 people. A massive blast in December 2011 destroyed much of a facility for enriching uranium in Isfahan, killing dozens. One of those who died was Revolutionary Guard major General Hasan Moghadam, in charge of developing long-range missiles and responsible for liaison with Syria and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Mossad?s other strategies included attempts to close down Iran?s international supply chain, shipping faulty components, planting a computer virus known as Stuxnet to disrupt the Siemens computerised system that runs centrifuges in Natanz, and two further cyber attacks, including another computer virus called Duqu.

Melman and Raviv recount how Israel?s determination to preserve its own monopoly on nuclear weapons in the region was behind its attack on September 6, 2007, on al-Kibar, in northeastern Syria. Mossad believed it housed a nuclear reactor designed by North Korea, whose purpose was to produce plutonium as the fissile material for bombs.

The assassinations serve to intimidate scientists and their families. Mossad intelligence believed that some scientists left the programme and scientists from China, Russia, Pakistan and elsewhere turned down invitations to work in Iran.

The assassination and terror campaign is being waged alongside the imposition of a list of sanctions against Iran by the United States, Europe and other powers. Washington has dispatched aircraft carriers to the Persian Gulf, amid bellicose statements insisting that ?all options? are on the table. There are constant threats from Israel that it will launch a pre-emptive attack on Iran?s nuclear facilities, as it did against Iraq in 1981 and Syria in 2007.

The book also recounts some of Israel?s highly illegal efforts to develop its own nuclear weapons arsenal, believed to contain at least 200 warheads with the ability to deliver them by intercontinental ballistic missiles, submarines and aircraft. Israel has never been subject to inspections, as it is not a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

Tel Aviv, with Washington?s full backing, routinely denounces Iran as a ?state sponsor? of terrorism for providing support to Hamas and Hezbollah, bourgeois nationalist movements that arose in response to Israeli aggression and expansionism, and the Syrian regime of President Assad.

Washington and Tel Aviv accuse Tehran of illegally producing enriched uranium that serves as fuel energy or components for medical uses for nuclear weapons, a much more complicated purification process, without citing any reliable evidence. At the same time, the US has approved India?s and Pakistan?s development of nuclear weapons outside the framework of the international inspection regime.

For some years, Israel has maintained that Tehran is ?just a year away? from being able to produce nuclear weapons. It carries out assassinations, bombings and sabotage campaigns, while the corporate media excuses these crimes and demonises their targets. This is entirely in line with the total silence on the criminal and reckless character of US policy in the region and its hypocrisy in waging a supposed ?war on terror? while supporting terrorist actions against regimes it has targeted for removal. Much less will commentators explain the real reasons for the endless provocations against Tehran?US determination to secure its hegemony over the oil-rich Middle East and Caspian region.

Ever since the overthrow of the Shah?s regime in 1979, Washington has been determined to end Iran?s challenge to US strategic interests. Contrary to expectations, the war on Iraq has served to strengthen Iran?s position in the region. This, and the mass movement of the working class that brought down longstanding US allies Zine El Abidine Ben Ali in Tunisia and Hosni Mubarak in Egypt, threatening to destabilise America?s allies in the Gulf, has led the US to pursue its agenda against Tehran ever more recklessly.

It has worked with a motley collection of pseudo-liberals, Islamists and ex-regime loyalists to launch a NATO-led war against Libya and now to topple the Assad regime in Syria. In each case, the US is relying on political forces backed by Saudi Arabia, the Gulf States, Egypt and Turkey.

Washington is attempting to redraw the political map of the entire Middle East. It threatens not only region-wide conflict but the involvement of the powers it is trying to exclude from this area of vital geostrategic concern, Russia and China.

How would a gold standard affect the price of gold in dollars? | Gold ...

Question: How would a gold standard affect the price of gold in dollars?

I?ve been investing in precious metals, but before I invest anymore I want to get a feel for the possibility of a gold standard in the US. Ron Paul would fight for it, and Gingrich says he would too (although I think he?s bullshitting). How would that affect my investment?
I haven?t received an answer yet. The question is: how will it affect the price of gold in dollars.

Answer:

The gold standard only exists in the dreams of gold bugs and supporters of Ron Paul. It is an unworkable system, that?s why every nation in the world has gone off of it. So, it will not affect your investment, because it is nothing more than a commodity and could never supplant the current monetary system.

Sisters' fundraising brings life-saving cancer treatment to Maine ...

Bernie Ring used to travel to Boston from his home in Sullivan at least every other week to be treated for a complication that developed after a bone marrow transplant. The donated marrow, meant to help him recover from leukemia, was attacking his body, leaving the skin around his waist and left leg thick and inflexible.

He had a difficult time walking and breathing. Regular blood-filtering treatments in Boston helped to control his body?s immune response, loosening up dead cells that were clogging his system and toughening his skin. But the time and expense of the 600-mile trip wore on Ring, and he risked his health by cutting back on treatments.

His future sister-in-law, Betty Weidner of Corea, thought other patients in Maine must be facing the same hardship. So she dialed up a number of health care facilities in the state to see if they would install the blood-filtering machine. One by one, they said no. The machine was too expensive and there weren?t enough patients to warrant the investment, she was told.

Months later, in the fall of 2011, Weidner called CancerCare of Maine, an Eastern Maine Medical Center facility located at the Lafayette Family Cancer Center in Brewer. Executive Director Allen L?Italien, after researching the treatment, made Weidner a deal: raise $40,000 to pay for the machine and CancerCare of Maine would install and staff it.

Weidner, who works as a receptionist in an Ellsworth dental office and had no fundraising experience, was undaunted. She knew a bake sale wouldn?t cut it.

?I called my sister and I said, ?We have to raise $40,000. I can?t make that many cookies!? She said, ?How are we going to do this?? And I said, ?I don?t know, I don?t know, but we?ll do it.??

Weidner and her sister, Debbie Crowley, rallied family, friends, neighbors and loved ones to their cause.

?I wasn?t real sure they could do it,? Ring said. ?In no time flat, they had $20,000 or $30,000 and I just couldn?t believe it.?

Weidner also won over Michael Crowley (no relation to Debbie Crowley), president of Healthcare Charities, the charitable arm of Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems. He agreed to pitch in and help her with fundraising materials if she continued her grass-roots collection drive.

?I was making a blind-faith commitment that if she could deliver on her end of this that we would find a way and we would deliver on our end,? he said.

Within three months, the group had raised $80,000, twice the original target. An anonymous donor in Hancock County heard about the cause and contributed roughly half of the needed funds, covering the match Healthcare Charities had promised.

The extra money allowed the group to upgrade to a version of the machine that halved treatment times and also could be used on children and teenagers.

In April, Ring became the machine?s first patient. It?s now operating at near capacity ? four other patients have the same complication as Ring, called graft-versus-host disease, and another suffers from a form of lymphoma that invades the skin.

?It cuts down on a lot of stress and travel time,? Ring said. ?I can get two treatments in less time than it took to get one day of treatment in Boston for probably a quarter of the cost.?

It is Maine?s only ?photopheresis? machine. Patients are hooked up to an IV that feeds their blood into the machine, which separates a small amount of white blood cells and treats them with a medicine that activates under exposure to ultraviolet light. The treated cells are then reinfused into the body in a roughly two-hour process that helps to bring the immune system back into balance.

?Essentially it teaches the cells to die properly, so that they don?t have that plaquing of tissue,? said Marcy Black, a registered nurse who administers the treatments.

Without the procedure, also used for other autoimmune disorders and organ transplant rejection, plaque can stiffen patients? lungs and other organs, L?Italien said.

?If they don?t do this, they?ll die,? he said. ?You can only have your skin and your lungs and the lining of your intestine fall apart so much.?

The treatment, available at Boston?s Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Massachusetts General Hospital, among other institutions, has been around for at least a decade, but more recently became widely available for a greater number of conditions, L?Italien said.

?We started thinking there was one patient in the whole region; now the machine is full,? he said.

There?s talk about raising money for a second photopheresis machine, so other patients in Maine don?t have to make the hours-long trip to Boston.

Weidner, who admits she hates asking people for money, isn?t sure she?ll take part. But she?s happy to see her future brother-in-law feeling better.

?My sister thought I was crazy,? she said, laughing.

Google: Didn't delete Street View data after all

LONDON (AP) ? After being caught spying on people across Europe and Australia with its Wi-Fi-slurping Street View cars, Google had told angry regulators that it would delete the ill-gotten data.

Google broke its promise.

Britain's Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) received a letter from Google in which the company admits it kept a "small portion" of the electronic information it had been meant to get rid of.

"Google apologizes for this error," Peter Fleischer, Google's global privacy counsel, said in the letter, which the ICO published on its website.

The ICO said in a statement that Google Inc. had agreed to delete all that data nearly two years ago, adding that its failure to do so "is cause for concern."

Other regulators were less diplomatic, with Ireland's deputy commissioner for data protection, Gary Davis, calling Google's failure "clearly unacceptable." Davis said his organization had conveyed its "deep unhappiness" to Google and wants answers by Wednesday.

Google said that other countries affected included France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Switzerland, Austria and Australia. Attempts to reach regulators in several of those countries weren't immediately successful Friday.

Google angered officials on both sides of the Atlantic in 2010 when it acknowledged that its mapping cars, which carried cameras across the globe to create three-dimensional maps of the world's streets, had also scooped up passwords and other data being transmitted over unsecured wireless networks. Investigators have since revealed that the intercepted data included private information including legal, medical and pornographic material.

The Mountain View, California-based company had been meant to purge the data, and Google chalked up its mistake to human error.

The company said it recently discovered the data while undertaking a comprehensive manual review of Street View disks. The company said it had contacted regulators in all of the countries where it had promised to delete data but realized it had not.

Fleischer's letter asks Britain's ICO for instructions on how to proceed; the ICO told Google that it must turn over the data immediately so it can undergo forensic analysis.

Friday's disclosure comes just over a month after the ICO reopened its investigation into Google's Street View, saying that an inquiry by authorities in the United States raised new doubts about the disputed program.

In April, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission fined Google, saying the company "deliberately impeded and delayed" its investigation into Street View.

It's unclear what, if any, penalties would be imposed on Google by Britain's ICO or regulators in any of the 10 other jurisdictions in which the company had wrongly retained Street View data.

"We need to take a look at the data... There's all sorts of questions we need to ask," an ICO spokesman said, speaking on condition of anonymity because office rules prohibit him from being named in print.

The ICO has the power to impose fines of up to 500,000 pounds (roughly $780,000) for the most serious data breaches, although penalties are generally far less severe and can involve injunctions or reprimands.

Jennifer Beals and Sarah Jones on working for YouTube vs. TV

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - Will the day come that appearing on a YouTube series is as desirable as working in TV? It's already here, says Jennifer Beals, star of an upcoming series for YouTube's Wigs channel.

"I think it's so fascinating what's happening - that we have this other platform for material that is incredibly intimate and it feels like you don't have to wait for somebody's permission to be creative," Beals said. "You don't have to wait for that magic, huge number in order to go tell a story. And I love that."

Wigs, created by producer-directors Rodrigo Garcia and Jon Avnet, targets women with dramatic serials starring actresses including Julia Stiles, America Ferrera, and Jena Malone. Each bears a woman's name. Beals' series, "Lauren," will begin August 13. Jones' series, "Kendra," will begin November 12.

In a sign of the disappearing lines between TV and the Internet, YouTube addressed the Television Critics Association summer press tour for the first time on Wednesday. The group's twice annual press tours were long the domain of, well, television networks.

YouTube, meanwhile, once the domain of amateurs, is now creating stars of TV and film - just as TV and film stars are turning to YouTube.

Beals and Jones, star of another Wigs serial, are both former stars of canceled Fox shows. Beals appeared on the network's "Lie to Me" and Jones on last season's "Alcatraz."

Jones said she wasn't put off by the lower pay of working online.

"It's a pioneering territory," she said. "I think to be on the forefront of that is an honor."

Malick and De Palma in competition at Venice film festival

ROME (Reuters) - Terence Malick's "To the Wonder" starring Ben Affleck and Rachel Weisz and Brian De Palma's "Passion" with Rachel McAdams and Noomi Rapace are among the films in competition at this year's Venice Film Festival, organizers said on Thursday.

A slimmed-down lineup of 18 films will be competing for the Golden Lion award at the 69th edition of the world's oldest film festival, which runs from August 29 to Sept 8.

Malick, winner of the Cannes film festival's Golden Palm award for his epic "The Tree of Life" in 2011, brings a romantic story of refound love to the Lido, while veteran U.S. director De Palma's "Passion" is a murderous tale of revenge.

Other films in the Competition section include Harmony Korine's "Spring Breakers" starring James Franco, Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens, Ramin Bahrani's "At Any Price" with Zac Efron and Dennis Quaid and Takeshi Kitano's latest offer "Outrage Beyond".

Only 17 films were announced at a news conference in Rome on Friday but the 18th entrant will be announced later.

Artistic director Alberto Barbera promised a "more sober, less glitzy" event for the 69th edition. "I had promised to reduce the number of films and I've kept that promise, more or less, apart from a few small exceptions," he said.

Mira Nair's thriller "The Reluctant Fundamentalist", about the conflict of loyalties facing a young Pakistani man working on Wall Street, will open the festival.

Spike Lee's "Bad 25", a documentary about the late Michael Jackson and Robert Redford's "The Company You Keep", with Julie Christie, are among films showing outside the main competition.

8 Reasons Why You Should Foster Animals | PetSafe Blog

Fostering helps saves more lives than adopting. Save a life- become a foster parent!

Roslyn has fostered several cats in addition to adopting the 4 she has in her forever home.

By Roslyn Ayers, PetSafe Web Content Specialist

Fostering animals is, simply put, saving lives. When you become a foster parent, you volunteer to keep a homeless pet in your home temporarily until they go to a forever home or can be taken into an animal shelter. Fostering is best done through a local animal shelter or rescue group. Many shelters rely on foster homes to keep pets until they have room, and some rescue groups are run entirely through foster care. While most people choose to foster dogs or cats, there are also rescues for hamsters, rabbits, horses, and other animals.

Many people come up with excuses not to foster. They think they?re too busy, or they don?t want to get attached to an animal they?ll have to give up in a month or so. I believe that with a little preparation and that by working with the right organization, most people would make great foster parents. Here are eight reasons why you should consider becoming a foster parent.

1. Fostering increases an animal?s chance of getting adopted. Foster families are usually the first to find out about the pet?s personality. You may even be the first to teach your foster pet basic house manners, making them more appealing to potential adopters.

2. Your own pets will learn more social skills. The more animals your pets come in contact with, the better they are at dealing with stress and getting used to strangers. Your pet might even find a playmate in your foster pet.

3. You get to see if you?re ready to own another pet. Maybe you want to foster a certain dog breed to see if you?re ready to adopt one, or you want to see if adding a cat into your all-dog household will upset the balance. Or maybe you want a new pet now but aren?t sure where you?ll be in the next 5, 10, 15, or 20 years. Though fostering is not a trial adoption period for that pet, it can help you try out changes to your current ?fur family.?

Foster homes give shelter cats like Selphie more time to find their forever homes.

Selphie is one of the cats Roslyn opened her home to as a foster pet for a few months until she could find her forever home.

4. Fostering is temporary. Cats require minimal space and are very low-maintenance, so they don?t take a lot of time to look after. If you?ve already got a dog, it?s not a big change to add one more pup to your daily walks and potty break schedule. Knowing the foster animal will only be with you for a short time makes it easier to find the time to take care of them, and it also makes it easier to give them up when it?s time.

5. You probably already have the space for one more. A spare bedroom, office, or screen porch is the perfect place for a foster pet. Even a bathroom is enough room for a kitten or puppy, and it?s much larger than a cage in a shelter. Sometimes a spare room is the only thing standing between an animal and euthanasia in an animal control facility.

6. You can choose how to foster. Only want to foster bulldogs? Prefer to look after kittens? Can?t foster for more than a few months at a time? Most rescues can accommodate your requests, as long as you agree to it beforehand and give them plenty of notice about changes.

7. Fostering keeps animals out of shelters. As wonderful as animal shelters are, they can be stressful from the lack of quiet, training, and exercise. And there?s nothing like the love and warmth of a family! Animals in foster care tend to be less stressed, better socialized, and have a lower chance of getting sick than animals in shelters.

8. You are saving a life. You feel good, your shelter or rescue group helps more animals, and your foster pet is happy, healthy, and well-socialized. Talk about win-win-win!

Stay tuned for a follow-up post on how to foster. Have another reason why you foster? Post it in the comments below!

Reliance Steel 2Q profit rises, boosts dividend

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Reliance Steel & Aluminum Co. said Thursday that its second-quarter profit rose 10 percent, but it cited the weak economy and difficulty in raising prices while giving a disappointing earnings forecast for the third quarter.

The company announced it would raise its quarterly dividend by 67 percent, to 25 cents per share.

The shares rose more than 6 percent in afternoon trading.

Net income rose to $108.8 million, or $1.44 per share, in the three months ended June 30 compared with $98.7 million, or $1.31 per share, a year earlier.

Revenue rose 8 percent to $2.21 billion from $2.05 billion a year earlier.

Analysts expected earnings of $1.41 per share on revenue of $2.24 billion, according to FactSet.

The company predicted third-quarter earnings of $1.15 to $1.25 per share. Analysts were expecting $1.31.

CEO David Hannah said Reliance expected uncertainty about the economy to last through the third quarter, which he said is a weaker period for the company even in normal times. He said it would be difficult to raise prices.

The metal-parts company said strong end markets included oil and gas, aerospace, farm and heavy equipment, and autos.

Its shares rose $2.93, or 6.5 percent, to $47.91 in afternoon trading. They are near the high end of their 52-week range of $31.09 to $58.58.

Millionaire medalists: Does Olympic spirit live on?

John Makely / NBC News

As a member of the U.S. basketball team, Ray Lumpp won gold at the 1948 Olympic Games in London. Lumpp played in an era where amateurism was central to the Olympic ideal. "Even if I just wanted to play professional basketball ... just by saying I wanted to be a pro, I would have been removed," Lumpp said. "The Olympics was supposed to be for fun and games -- no compensation. I was a gold medal Olympic champion, but I owed money."

By Ian Johnston, NBC News

Updated at 10:05 a.m. ET: LONDON -- On August 14, 1948, Ray Lumpp stood in London's Wembley Stadium. As "The Star-Spangled Banner" played and "Old Glory" fluttered in the breeze, an Olympic gold medal was placed round his neck.

"To be in the Olympics was a dream come true," Lumpp, 89, told NBCNews.com from his Long Island home. "To receive a gold medal ? it still shines in my heart."?

In the aftermath of World War II, parts of London still lay in ruins, food was rationed and the ?strictly amateur? athletes were put up in basic accommodation. But ?The Austerity Games? remain a special event for people like Lumpp.

In sharp contrast to 1948, the London 2012 Olympics has a total budget in excess of $17 billion, a sum greater than the GDP of many of the 200-plus competing nations. About 9 million tickets have been sold and a global TV audience of billions is expected to watch more than 10,000 athletes compete.

Sixty-four years after competing in London, four gold-medal-winning athletes recall the excitement of the summer Olympics

Amid the glorification of multi-millionaires competing in sports including basketball, tennis and soccer, the sea of corporate sponsorship and fortress-style security -- has the Olympic spirit been forgotten? What would previous Olympians make of today?s event?

Would the Ancient Greeks --? who staged the first Olympic Games in 776 B.C. -- give their blessing or call down the wrath of Zeus? And what would the founder of the modern Games, French aristocrat Pierre de Coubertin, make of the demise of the amateur ethos?

Courtesy of Ray Lumpp

Ray Lumpp, seen here in 1948, is due to travel to London to attend this summer's Olympics.

Lumpp played in an era where, unlike today, amateurism was central to the Olympic ideal.

?Even if I just wanted to play professional basketball, I would have been removed from the American team -- just by saying I wanted to be a pro, I would have been removed,? Lumpp told NBCNews.com. "The Olympics was supposed to be for fun and games -- no compensation."

"I was married with one child and one on the way. I was a gold medal Olympic champion, but I owed money,? he said.?"You couldn't have sponsors, you couldn't do this, you couldn't do that ... you have to live and you have to eat."

More London 2012 coverage from NBCNews.com

After Lumpp returned to the U.S., he signed a professional contract with the New York Knicks and was soon ?out of hock.?

'For the love of it'
While he said that the acceptance of professionals into the games was a good idea -- meaning countries could send their best competitors and a level playing field for all ? he added that "sometimes money is too important, you lose the ideals of the Games."

The soccer superstar tells Meredith Vieira about his long-time friendships with Princes William and Harry, and explains his fond feelings for Queen Elizabeth II.

?The Games are about taking part, peace and understanding, and competing against one another, not fighting ?? playing against each other for the love of it,? he said.

"[In 1948] we had great admiration for the British people. Whatever they had, that was it ? but whatever they had, they shared it and put on a great Games under the conditions,? he said.

Fortress London: UK protects Games with biggest security operation since WWII

Lumpp said the success of the 1948 Games ? the first since Munich 1936 in Hitler?s Germany -- had been vital.

"After that 12-year period when there were no Olympics, it was important, very important, that the next Games be a success because it would affect the future of the Games ? because people might say 'it's not worth it,' and it could fade away,? he said.

As the U.S. women's soccer team kicked off a game against France, one athlete from Greece was removed after sending what officials are calling a racist tweet. A further warning to athletes: the World Anti-Doping Agency said more than 100 athletes caught doping were sanctioned in the months leading up to the Olympics. NBC's Kevin Tibbles reports.

The gap between Games was somewhat longer when Coubertin hit upon the idea of recreating the evemt.

The Christian Roman Emperor Theodosius had decreed in 393 A.D. that ?pagan cults? such as the Olympic Games would no longer be permitted. Some 1,503 years later, the first modern event was held in Athens.

Modern Games born from war
Despite the emphasis on promoting global harmony, Coubertin?s big idea was born out of a war.

"It may be a little bit disappointing. You may think it's a product of peace,? Dikaia Chatziefstathiou, an expert on the Olympics and an academic at Canterbury Christ Church University in England, told NBCNews.com.

France had not long been defeated in the 1870-1871 war against Prussia and there was concern that the country?s youth were ?not very active,? she said. ?The French government worried that the army wasn't strong enough.?

Coubertin, an expert on education, was brought in to shake things up and, on a fact-finding mission to England, he noted the emphasis on studying Ancient Greece and Rome at the country?s private schools, and was also impressed by the emphasis on sport and ?muscular Christianity.?

This, he thought, could be the answer to France?s diminished military might.

The U.S. Olympic committee has asked the Navy SEALs to train athletes with about a dozen teams, including the women's field hockey team and swimmer Michael Phelps. Working with the elite warfare unit pushes the athletes to go beyond what they think they're capable of doing. NBC's Chris Jansing reports.

But the late 19th century was also the so-called Age of Optimism when it was hoped that the world could put an end to war, disease and other great scourges. International movements such as the Scouts, the international Esperanto language, the YMCA and others sprang up "all about making society and the world a more peaceful place,? Chatziefstathiou said.

"He [Coubertin] came to the idea that actually sport can be used to have a peaceful celebration among the nations because he saw the power of sport,? Chatziefstathiou said. "He said 'Why not use sport and education to actually unite nations around the world?'"

London's Olympic lanes befuddle motorists

The idea caught the world?s imagination, but the first Olympiad in 1896 was a very different games to 2012 or even 1948.

There were no women. ?He [Coubertin] really didn't want women to sweat. He didn't want women to have any physical exertion,? Chatziefstathiou said, explaining this in terms of the social norms of the aristocracy of the time.

For the first time ever, all 205 countries competing in the Olympic games are sending female athletes. NBC's Meredith Vieira reports and speaks with sprinter Tahmina Kohistani, the sole woman on Afghanistan's Olympic team.

Also, most of the 1896 competitors were members of the upper classes and, if the right sort of person turned up, they just might find themselves allowed to take part.

George Stuart Robertson was one such athlete. He wrote an Ancient Greek ode that was recited at the end of the 1896 games and won a bronze medal in the doubles tennis. He also took part in the discus, which was perhaps a mistake, as he is still on record as achieving the worst-ever throw of about 27-and-a-half yards.

Crowds walk around the Olympic Stadium in Athens during the 1896 Summer Games.

However -- in a sign of the Olympics? ability to break barriers -- one of the heroes of 1896 was a Greek peasant called Spyros Louis, winner of the marathon.

?He became a big symbol of the Games ? because without money, without preparation he came and ran in his traditional [Greek] clothing,? Chatziefstathiou said.

While Coubertin?subscribed to amateurism, she said she did not think he would not be appalled by the money in today?s Games. "If he saw that the movement wouldn't really survive without commercialism ? I don't think he would be against commercialism with controls,? she said.

Chatziefstathiou?s interest in the Games extends beyond the purely academic. She will be one of scores of dancers from all over the world in Friday's Opening Ceremony and was enthused by the "joy" among them at a practice held Monday.

Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle, who is directing this year's Olympic Opening Ceremony, pulls back the curtain on rehearsals to reveal to Meredith Vieira what viewers can expect, including whether Queen Elizabeth II will make a special appearance.

Even Twitter keeps Opening Ceremony (mostly) a secret

"If Coubertin came back [today], he would absolutely love the spirit of the people, and how many people of all ages, all nationalities are all there and enjoying it, and really actually believing it [the Olympic spirit],? she said.

Concerns over corruption, such as betting scandals, might be a worry, but Coubertin would be proud of how ?his baby? had grown, she said.

"He wouldn't say 'Oh my God, this is a monstrosity' because he was so keen to keep the movement going,? Chatziefstathiou said. ?I think he would be absolutely over the moon."

East London, which will host the Olympic Games, boasts a colorful history. NBC News' Jim Maceda reports.

The participation of women, however, might prove too big a step for a man of his background, she suggested. ?I don't think he would like this. He would be able to adapt to many things, but this is a spectacle I don't think he would be keen to see."

Ancient Games: Naked and men-only
Most Ancient Greeks were similarly against women at the Olympic Games, and to a much greater degree. With the exception of the priestess of Demeter, who oversaw events for religious reasons, any woman found watching the events faced being killed.

However, at least one female spectator is said to have survived the experience.

Kallipateira, the mother of a boxer, sneaked in dressed as a man to watch her son compete, Armand D?Angour, a fellow and tutor in classics at Jesus College, Oxford University, told NBCNews.com.

?Then when her son wins, she jumps up with delight and gives herself away as a woman,? he said.

Summoned by the judges, she?told them how sport was part of her and her family's life, saying ?this is who I am.? And the judges, D?Angour said, decided to let her off.

The idea of female athletes would have been shocking for most Greeks, ?apart from one city state, which was Sparta,? he said.

This marble statue of an athlete stooping to throw the discus is one of several Roman copies made of a lost bronze originally crafted in the 5th century BC by the sculptor Myron.

In Sparta, women had a degree of equality and were known to be ?very sporty.?

?Spartan women were considered to be women with six-packs ? ?strong, not necessarily beautiful, and quite scary,? D?Angour said.

However, all Ancient Greeks would have been more in tune with the today?s Olympics when it came to ideas about money.

D?Angour said athletes were sponsored by their cities and spent years in training.

?And of course if they won, they were feted, celebrated and odes were written for them ? an expensive business. They would be fed at public expense for the remainder of their lives. There was a lot of money in it,? he added.

Flame 'nothing to do with Ancient Greece'
The amateur ideal or so-called ?Corinthian spirit? was ?a bit of an invention really,? D?Angour said.

Other modern inventions include the Olympic flame ? ?that?s nothing to do with Ancient Greece, it comes from the idea of the eternal flame in Rome? ? and the Olympic rings, he said.

D?Angour, author of Ancient Greek odes to the Athens and London Olympics, said Ancient Greeks would be shocked by ?the completely irreligious? nature of the modern games.

?Zeus, the head of their gods, was very much in the center of the games,? he said. A central message was ?as great as human beings strive to be, they can never be as great as the gods.?

This large mosaic of Hercules, the legendary founder of the Olympic Games and patron of athletes, dates from the Roman period.

And they might also be disappointed that the athletes were wearing any clothes.

?They competed naked ? you?d see a lot of dangly bits. We don?t really know the origins of that. One story says a competitor in a running race tripped over something he was wearing, and after that they decided everyone should go naked,? D?Angour said.

?I think it was to do with a celebration of the body beautiful. They were keen on the beauty of the bodies, shining, oiled bodies with fantastic musculature and beautiful balance,? he said.

But overall D?Angour said he thought that any Ancient Greeks transported to London 2012 be pleasantly surprised.

?The ambition to do well, the striving to achieve excellence in a sport ? Let?s say they got over the fact they were living in a different century, I think they would find it fairly familiar and would be excited,? he said.

A diverse community in East London will welcome the world to Britain for the 2012 Olympic Games. Meet residents and hear how they feel about having a huge, world stage in their backyard.

They might be a little bemused by events such as synchronized swimming, he said, but the 100 meters and the world?s fastest man, Usain Bolt, would likely be popular. But even Bolt would be measured against ancient heroes, whose true speed can only be guessed at.

?I think what they would feel is ?this chap [Bolt] is a bloody fast runner? but ? because they didn?t have records --? they would say ?Diagoras,? --? who ran in 426 BC ? ?was pretty good too, I can tell you,?? D?Angour said.

And there might be a few requests for one ancient favorite, chariot racing, to be restored.

?That would be fantastic, wouldn?t it?? D?Angour said. ?Can you imagine? It?d be like Ben Hur all over again.?

Rapper Nate Dogg had 6 kids, no will, and $200,000 in real estate to his name when he died last year ... and now a lawyer's been named to divvy up his assets.

In probate documents filed yesterday in L.A. County Superior Court ... Nate's home in Pomona, CA is valued at $350,000 -- but he still owed $150,000.

The documents also list his six children -- 4 daughters, 2 boys -- who will inherit his estate ... which may include much more cash than the $200k. Nate's earnings from his music catalog will ultimately be added to the pot.?

According to the docs, attorney Alex Borden has been nominated -- by one of Nate's daughters and the mother of one of his boys -- to handle his affairs.
