RAF Tornado jet pilots killed in Moray Firth crash are named

Flight Lieutenant Hywel Poole, 28, was named as one of the men killed in the crash involving two Tornado GR4 planes, while Squadron Leader Samuel Bailey, 35, and Flight Lieutenant Adam Sanders, 27, were missing presumed dead.

The fourth, who remains in a serious but stable condition in hospital, has not been named.

In a statement to the House of Commons earlier, Mr Hammond said: 'I am sure the House will wish to join me in paying tribute to the Crew from 15 (Reserve) Squadron, based at RAF Lossiemouth, who were involved in the Tornado GR4 aircraft incident on Tuesday.

'Flight Lieutenant Hywel Poole who was killed, and Squadron Leader Samuel Bailey and Flight Lieutenant Adam Sanders who are still missing and must be presumed dead.

'My thoughts - and, I am sure, those of the entire House - are with their loved ones at this difficult time and with the fourth member of the Squadron involved in the incident, who is currently in a serious but stable condition in hospital.'

Flight Lieutenant Poole, from Bangor, had been training on the GR4 since late last year, and was described as a 'capable and confident pilot' by Wing Commander Jonathan Moreton.

Flight Lieutenant Saunders, from Lancashire, had served in the RAF's Air Training Corps before moving to Lossiemouth to undergo GR4 training.

Squadron Leader Bailey joined the Tornado Force in 2001 and served in operations in Iraq. The Nottingham-born officer had been a member of 15 (Reserve) Squadron since 2004.

The two planes came down in the Moray Firth on Tuesday about 40km (25 miles) south of Wick.

Prime minister David Cameron also paid tribute to the airmen and said that while the circumstances surrounding the cause of the crash remained uncertain it was 'clearly still a very serious incident'.
